One drawback of the Phatty is that when the modulation index is at maximum, the actual modulation is not as much as other synths. Another thing is that the VCF does not open as far as the Minitaur...I generally tend to add some overdrive in the VCF to get some extra top end, its not a bright synth at all. Especially if you are used to soft synths, Virus, Nord Lead which are bright and sit in the mix with minimum effort. You need to work it, take out some low (mids), add some top end for it to sit in a modern busy bright arrangement that is typical is pys-trance nowdays. Most analog synths do actually.

Did you test if it's really the VCF?
By for example running the Minitaur thru the Phatty's filter?
There was a discussion about this at Moogmusic, and I believe they concluded that it wasn't the VCF but the VCO not sounding as bright. |

I didn't, I just noticed that the Minitaur sounds brighter with the VCF all the way open. I just assumed that it is the VCF, but assumption is the mother of all fuck ups..

Btw, have you different filter modes?
The 1-pole filter is noticably brighter than the 4-pole.
