What do you all think of the 'Minimal' sounding trance that has been swept across the worldwide trance scene over the last few years? Before that sound there was generally a much more psychedelic, driving sound that actually made you dance with your feet OFF the floor instead of wondering why you're even in the place, as is the case nowadays. Atmosphere has gone out of the window and been replaced with image. Does anyone else thirst for the return of PURE, DRIVING, ACID INDUCED nights of madness?

well, i don't know about the acid induced thing, but i do think minimal trance is a bit too minimal.
i like it when the music soars and twirls and just plain gives a boom to the head, minimal doesn't do that, well, to me at least.
it's just too monotonous with no heights, usually i just stand in place and move my head when i hear it istead of jumping and smiling, so i still like the other stuff: the psychadelic, full-on stuff, i like having a rise that lifts me with it!
of course that could be cause i don't take chemicals at all, i just smoke sometimes at parties (i actually like to be "sahi" sometimes), and i still jump for hours on end if the music's jumpy, and minimal doesn't make me jumpy :)
well, that's just my opinion of course, anyway, to each his own...

well i think that the minimal sound took over couse it puts another level into the meaning Trance.
Trance music , like the house music , exepts more & more different but yet similar kinds of sub-styles.
one of them are minimal.
The sounds that made us dance changed (not to all of us)
Nower days we dance to minimal Low Bpm that is Hard BaseDrum not like the psychedelic sounds that got High bpm crazy sounds.

Its mostly a matter of taste , everyone likes different sounds and the Trance scene has expanded so far that there are several categories and everyone can choose what he likes.

np: for me its Progressive Trance ;)

yes it is al a matter of taste; ask yourself what so do u like - float or groove?
the emphasys in the last couple of years has been more on the groove/beat elements of the music rather then on the melodic sides of it cuz the melodic sides have been heavily explored by two generations of trance makers. the newer generation of producers and djs wanna make u groove by using less melodies and more bass + percussion work. it is much much harder to make interesting bass + percussion mmusic compared to melodic music but when done correctly it is the best. the more u listen to the music - the less u need stimulates from the melodies + fx and u concentrate more on the basic elements - the one's that make the groove.
I try to create a mix between the two and my latest trax are minimal melodies. a lot of fun.

well, it all depends. lets take me for example. I Love Fullon, melodic, happy, uplifting, banging trance.
but on the other hand, at night, that kinda music is kind of a turn off. it's TOO full, too speedy, too hectic for me to dance.
minimalistic trance, and i mean GOOD minimalistic, can make you bounce at 135 bpm, the same way a fullon 145 bpm track does. it varies, of course, and it pretty much depends on the music a DJ chooses to put on in his set. at home i don't listen to minimal, but more stuff like Infected, Oforia, Pigs in space, Juan, MFG and cosma's new album, but at parties i like it versatile, diverse. cause at a party u have the night, and the day, and the vibe is right for each if the music is right on each.

LOL MENTAL!

ya well... i might do that, but i am broke, no money to buy a small mixer + who will want me to play for them? :(

Jason: that's also correct, that's why i don't OVER whine... becuase i enjoy the minimal at night and the fullon at morning.
but when the D.J playing at the morning doesn't charge us with all he's got it sucks.

Guy: can't wait to hear that. - "balance in all things!"

jason, that was very true, but the problem is that there aren't many good minimal tracks that keep you going through all the night, and of course full-on is more of a morning music, but there are other stuff for the night, minimal is one of the night categories, differant psychadelic stuff are too, the party organisers should try to mix a couple of dj's with differant tastes if they can't have a dj that does that by himself.
anyway, one type of trance going on for four hours is bad, no matter what style it is, there is a need for diversity, how to have that diversity in the party requires skill and good managing!

Freakazoid, i'd suggest you get yourself to a party where Guyshanti is playing, or Domestic and pixel, and than you'll get a grasp of what diverse minimal trance is.

trance, by definition is a hypnotic state of mind, and in psy-trance parties that state is reached through the repetetive nature of the beat (4x4 as we call it). the beat repeats itself over and over again, and works like a hypnotizer's watch - putting your awareness to sleep so your sub-conciousness can rise and interpet the sounds of the music. that's why I believe progressive (or minimal, or groove, or whatever u wanna call it) trance is better for getting the 'trip' going - its repetetive, hypnotic, and doesn't break your TRANCE with melodies - and that's a real state of trance.

now, the main problem IMO is that ppl in Israeli parties are not patient enough, and usualy wanna get their full-on music at 2:00AM. most parties like that end at about 8:00-9:00 in the morning, because ppl are anally brutilized for 7 hours, and have no power to dig anymore (and its really boring to hear the same running 146-7BPM tracks one after another...)
when there's a logical buildup for a party, and the night builds patiently and hypnotically, when the morning comes ppl have been grooving all night and now, when the music changes into the full-on trance, the change is noticeble.
but when the party consists of only full-on music from 1:00AM, its just a continuation of the night. nothing changes, the sets sound the same, and the whole point of transition from darkness to light is lost.

think about it and try to remember how it was a few years back, you could hear it when after a long hard night suddenly the music took flight, and new sounds of morning music were suddenly heard...

peace and patience,
The Pompp
