Right now hip hop has taken the mainstream audience in the USA. They successfully cover both the dancing aspect with 'club mixes' but also have the standard rap tracks. Usually there is one 'thug love' song on each album designed for the ladies and play on the radio. These people know how to market their music to a wide audience. The lyrics are generalized enough so that everyone can relate the their songs. In psy however, it seems to me that the artists are usually reproducing the sounds you hear in your head when you are trippin on hallucinogenics. Not everyone can relate to this, especially in the USA.
Infected has taken a step in the right direction for mass marketing with the pop sounding cd from converting vegetartians. Honestly when listening to that i picture the backstreet boys (specifically the BT-esque sound). The backstreet boys sold over 9.4 million copies of their album millenium. Their lyrics are usually about love and heartbreak, just about anyone can relate to that.
If these artists really want to mass market, they are going to have to water down the music to make it acceptable by a larger audience. Like nirvana doing acustical shows or metallica playing emo rock.
I think that mass marketing defeates the whole purpose of psychedelia. Maybe I am wrong, but the feeling i get is that the whole sub culture is about letting go of your inhibitions and persuing whatever impulses your subconcious throws at you. It's about debauchery and hedonism and messy sin and pleasure. Most people on this planet arent ready to treat themselves to these, and it's that majority that you are going to have to market to if you really want to make big money. =)

Pop music is all about the vocals... add a singer to psy sounds, like VNV did, and there's no reason it can't be a Top 40 chart smash.

The deep instrumental stuff will be our little secret           tiger got to hunt,
bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand.
