@dogoftears I think what he likes about parus is that it doesn't have any long breaks

most of the fullpower/dark/forest/whateverthefuckit'scalled DJs around here like to play music with tons of weird breaks and slowdowns and glitchouts etc etc...

...which is trippy and fun to experience but it gets old fast and it's annoying when all you want to do is dance and lose yourself in the beat. It's like trying to fall asleep and every 30 seconds someone flicks you on the nose.

As a person who loves "fullpower/dark/forest/whateverthefuckit'scalled" I pretty much agree. With the odd exception, of course.

I find trance to be less exciting without breaks and tricks and stutters..stuff that keeps you on your toes...seems in this thread, that people like to be comfortable and predict 4x4 (the 4 on the floor vibe) the whole time...my music has lots of drops and edits..i would go insane just writing unce unce unce unce for 10 minutes.

I would add that I think it's possible to achieve the "state of trance" or whatever through either hypnotic repetition or overstimulation. With either method, any particular artist can make it good and psychedelic. (Or not, of course!)           http://soundcloud.com/herbert-quain

Your set was good until the second track came on lol then once in a while I'd hear one that's ok.

Okay and what was wrong with it?! You can't expect me to improve if you don't provide useful criticism

Some of us see trance dance as a form of meditation. Don't you think "exciting" music is the opposite of what you would want if you are trying to meditate?

PS I wish more people would get why talking on the dancefloor is bad... I only recently understood it myself

Shiranui I'll PM you for critique. or better yet, come to the weekly tonight. But to give you a hint; if your set rocked your world when you were playing it, then it's a world rocking set and it doesn't matter what me or anyone else has to say about it! You can't expect to please everyone, so just be sure you're pleasing yourself, ultimately, because music is for you first. If it happens to do something for someone else, then great! Of course if DJing is something you want to do commercially (book gigs) then yeah, you better get a good sense of what people are in the mood for. But please don't use me as a critique for that. I don't think I represent what the majority of people are used to, or into.

Vasili, I'll be there, homie

I'm really stoked to see responses here. And I totally respect all of your tastes in what gets you off. I'm more than glad to hear it, even if it does differ from my taste.
Everyone's taste can't always be the same at any given moment in their lives, but I know there can be convergences, which is what makes this music such a great melting pot of individuals.
I kinda think Taste is like an evolvation (to steal a Pokemon term lol) of all you've ever been moved by throughout your life.
I like what you said pete. Everything is valid as a meditative or engaging music. Gotta respect everyone's thing as you'd expect yours to be respected.

Regarding talking on the dance floor; it's just disrespectful to people who are there to take a break from social interaction and want to be taken away by the music. And disrespectful to the artist or dj.
We refer to psytrance (and hell, music in general) as being a journey and the dance floor a sacred space etc. It's not just rhetoric and an empty tag line. It's for real. Remember that and give it that respect!

Thanks for the mix, hknate. some badass tracks on there and I appreciate the continuity.

rich I think I misunderstood what you meant by "cutting the bass"

(and synchronize is too far away for me to go to regularly... can't afford the trip across the bay just to hang out with people for 2-3 hours)

You're confusing me a little by starting out saying that no one plays real psytrance and everyone is doing it wrong, then saying "everything is valid for someone" x.x

Yeah, I started out being annoyed, selfish and facetious that I don't get to hear more of what I want to hear. I want my $25 to last longer than an hour and half set by one artist. For me, trance is a balls out repetitive beat and I'm bummed there isn't more offered like that. So me saying '...like they don't know' is just saying 'WTF, keep that shit going!' when they puss out and drop some weak ass beat or some overzealous dj trick that cuts the balls off the kick etc.

Underneath whatever frustration I have for the music here, I respect others' tastes, especially when it appears they are genuine about it, like I got from cinderVomit, and from the exuberance in exploration I hear in DoT's music . Doesn't mean I have to be into it, or choose to listen to it at all. If I don't find it dark, I'm not going to call it dark. If I don't find it trance, I'm not going to call it trance. But I will respect the artist if they love what they're doing.

I think this is why I started listening to techno and gave up on "trance"....

(re: finding trance thru repetition / subtle change + sound design vs manic/epic rave glitch breakdowns and build ups)

I see this as a repeating cycle... the trance-dancers come up with a new style of music to dance to and it's good for a while

then the DJs realize they can be more $ucce$$ful and popular by appealing to non-trance-dancers with "epic" music, and that ruins the whole thing.

also it's difficult to produce gradual transitions between psytrance tracks without using loops, and many trance parties have CDJs with no loop feature (CDJ-100...)

Well, to be honest, when i meditate, or attempt to i should say, i do so in a quiet space..so in that regard ANY sound would break me out of said "trance"....i cannot cater to everybody's personal preference, but i can put MY passion, what drives ME as an artist, and what i feel SOME people will enjoy into what i'm doing, rather it have breaks, completely drop out into a 3 minute ambient section etc etc...I find what trances me out isn't the boom boom boom boom..it's the pads, the atmosphere, the entire world that is created within the confines of 4 on the floor kick/bass.

Cosmo, aerofurious...stuff like that i can't get in to because it's just constant start and stop..which i don't dig not because its knocks me out of a trance state, just because i simply dont enjoy it lol.

Well not to shamelessly self-promote, but I'm going to shamelessly self-promote-- what about this mix?

I like Parus and usually stick to the driving non-gabber psytrance, so maybe this will be up your alley:

(and before I get flamed, I like a lot of the fast stuff too)
