Live set VS. DJ set

hey kids, this subject has been eating me for a while now. I am getting the feeling that lots of artists and party promoters are ripping people off by saying that "Astral Projection" (just an example ) will be playing live. Now when I get to the party, I hear the same exact tracks that I recognize from the CD's with maybe an added effect here or there. And the whole time the DJ is turning knobs acting like he is Schumacher driving the Indy 500. Do they really think we are that stupid? All they are doing is pressing play on their DAT or computer. This way they can charge people much more by promoting the party as a Live set. This was the feeling I was getting while listening to Infected Mushrooms live set. But I have to mention the one Live set that really blew me away :headshot: SON KITE! I have both of their CD's and I maybe heard a familiar bassline once in a while, that was it. The rest of the music was made from scratch, they were playing with their loops the whole time, adding sounds and messing around based on the crowd's reaction. Every once in a while Seb would hook up his electronic violin for some mindblowing effects. They were doing this for 2 whole hours. It was all one track. By far the best musical experience I have encountered.

Now my question is: which acts have you heard that really give REAL live performences, and which acts DON'T? Isn't a good DJ set better then a fake live set? How hard is it to really put on a good live performance? and what equipment is needed?

i will answer only few of your questions and will leave others for others

so, u absollutelly right in all your points.
u have to agree that bad dj set is worse than good live act ?? right ??
so, no "this best" conclusion here.
just listen and enjoy...

about Son Kite live - man, u got a point and good, u dont need ask nothing more.. realy..

Son Kite,Haldolium,Atmos,S-Range,Ticon is your kind of live acts u will like... loops work and alot different bass lines that u hear how the artists make while the live...
u have another type of live acts and its acts that include live instruments. it can be very nice perfomance btw. Star Sound Orchestra or Sonic Fusion will bomb your mind not less that mechanic mixer work live...
bottom line: ENJOY !!

First of all thanks ... means a ot that people really notice that we're trying to do something more with our liveset. IMO most djsets are much more interesting compared to liveset (in the dancescene) ... like Apocalypse said almost 99 % of all trance liveacts are pressing play and then "pretending" to turn some knobs or at most adding som fx on the top (and honestly this fxs doesn't make any difference for the dance experience).
Me and Marcus have put a lot of time and money to be able to do something more comapred to what a dj does with our track and at most times you can see that the dancefloor gets more organic and that the people can feel that their reaction can be heard in what we're playing ... the whole thing with the trance scene is to create a feeling together.
I would be happy if more people made a reaction to all the bullshit faked playback livesets ... in that way more artists would make something new and interesting on stage.... just sad that you have to force some people to do something good.
And honestly I can't really understand that people manage to do nothing on stage .... sooooo boring!
I have to give my studio some food ...will answer the questions later cause I think that this was an really interesting post.

Maybe the problem is that u can make a track only with softwares. And how a artist that uses only softwares will make a live? I agree that make a live only pressing play is boring, but I think that the price that u have to pay to have a good equipment to play a real live is too high. And today I don´t know if most of artists have that money to make a real live.

I´m not saying that this kind of software-lives are good, but the difficult of having all equipments must be considered.

Am I wrong? That´s an opinion of a listener.

Well i have 2 say that iheard lots of so called "live sets" in my life, and i have 2 say that from what i know, only 3 were defenitly real live sets!
Son Kite in the Cave
Marcus (Delta/Xdream) on several locations
Mark Van Der Heigh (Sth like that, frim atomic records) on the last TDE! great and experimental-psychedelic set he gave there!!           "...God made weed, Man made booze. Who do u trust?..."

Yes i heard many so called "LIVE"s. and i doubt most of them were real lives. I dont know why they even call them lives these days. Maybe back in the days when music was made with synths, and other hardware(not just computer) i think they played "LIVE", but now a days i think since most of the music is made with just computers, a so called "LIVE" is almost not possible.
So many fake lives thats why i dont go to those kinds of parties.
SON KITE for sure. also Element had a good live set.
If im payin like 50 US dollars for a party i would like to see a good live. not just acting. but what can i say the music i admit is good.

I sencond every word each and everyone of you said here.
Most people are not expert in trance, and don't understand how a live act is suppose to be.
They see artists pressing some buttons, and think it's a live set, when usually most of them are doing a d.j set.

Son Kite so far are the only artists I really appreciated their live set. You could hear what a live set was all about.
In the Luzit caves where he played during the Sylvester here in Israel, people went crazy.           Majority is never right!

Raver Girl,

the subject was about when a party is promoted by saying someone is playing LIVE.
the danceppl don't need to think too much if it's a LIVe or a DJset. The Promoters said Live then they will think it's a Live.

That's what I was saying
that most people can distinguish between a live set and a d.j set.
So organisers exploite that, and in many cases they say artists will give a live set, knowing that they won't and that almost nobody will notice this.           Majority is never right!

The Haldolium live that I saw once was the most amazing. I think they sure used some support media, but the eletronic drums used by one of the guys was really kick ass stuff Psysex is another live act with eletronic drums, which give another level to the Live. The Saiko Pod live was amazing too. No drums but it seemed like real real !
