it is not clear to me what one should expect from a 'live' psy act. after all this stuff is all done on computer / with synths / sequencers etc and not played in the 'classical' fashion of an instrumental performance.

on the other hand it is clearly 'cheating' to just play some dats of your own tunes.

this son kite live sounds really amazing
but i wonder what the other artists in this forum would consider constitutes their live performance, e.g. putting effects over prelaid loops to build totally new track 'live' or just sort of live remixing?

any ideas people?           >>love will tear us apart...<<

Can someone tell me what is able to do live? Im no music maker, but if the song is originally made 100% electronic, then what is able to do different live?           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

Watch for a party with Haldolium live i recommend them to everyone,
These guys are real musicians, with many ideas on stage and creative music. They have longer and incomplete special live versions of their tracks so they add new effects ,playing live percussions ,synthlines melodies with intros and outros and some vocals sometimes..

They are great!

all of their sticks were flying in the air, cause they were so drunk.
It was a funny site.
But they did give a good set.           Majority is never right!

I really liked the haldolium set I've been to. It was simply amazing what those guys could do with the electronic drums... also KOX BOX live act was something else... really out of this world.

Funny thing i saw yesterday at a party.
LOOPUS IN FABULA "LIVE". but the funny thing was, when they were playing they werent using any headphones to check their sound, they weren`t touching any knobes, and the best part they were both just dancing the whole time without touching anything near the computer. Almost made me laugh. They could of at least acted like they were playing "LIVE", but i think they were havin too much fun they just forgot.

i'd add sun project!

i 2nd both those suggestions! let me add that Dark Soho live with guitars and is quite a treat, Sun Project is amazing to see live, its like a psychadelic heavy metal band on stage.

I have seen Astrix on flyers saying that its a live set, i dont really know what that means...           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Ok, u guys r the experts... I'd just add that IM gave a pretty good live, although short, about 56m (someone counted, this is wicked, I'd never be looking to the watch in a festival...)

I want just to ask something: When a "live" begins u usually can hear the difference... But it seems it could be faked with some reverbs, fx and stuff...

What makes a live live, not fake?

i'm currently trying to prepare and practice a live psytrance show...

i'm already in a live dance band (www.keiretsu.org.uk). that band is mostly dnb/breakbeat orientated although we do have the odd 4/4 moment, we also have a full brass section, an electric violinist, guitarist, bassist, percussion, keyboard, etc. if anyone of u come and see us i guarantee we will be the best live band you ever saw

however now i want to work out a properly psytrance live act. my plan at the moment is for most of the track to come off my roland sp808ex sampler. but just cos its a sampler, dont think its gonna be like a DAT, its a performance sampler where you trigger all the loops and stuff by pushing these big glowing buttons. i have to condense each of my tracks to 16 parts (i have 16 buttons), with only max 4 playing at any one time... which is pretty hard.

so for a few 'spare' parts i cant fit on the sampler, i will be jamming on top with 2 keyboards.

helping me out with that task will be two of my bandmates - our drummer who has just bought an electronic drumkit yesterday, so once he figures that out, he should be able to drum, or else even trigger any kind of samples.

and also our percussionist and didj player (who played with jairamji at samothraki 2002 btw)... who i think will be really helpful... because no matter how "truly live" i am, you might not think it looks very live, whereas having a topless dreadlocked guy bashing the shit out of some congas looks very live

then everything goes into a mackie mixer with internal fx, and kaos pad on the fx loop, for more tweaking there.

as for what makes it live... well... i think you should remember to listen out for the structure. because the parts on my sampler are mixed down from my computer they are obviously going to sound pretty much identical as on CD... apart from a bit of filtering and stuff i might do....

so i expect the main 'live' aspect will be improvised structure... for example i have a basic loop rolling... now on the cd version perhaps riff A comes in, then later riff B, then finally riff C. live, i might decide to kick in C straightaway, and then kick in with A+B simultaneously after that. or cutting the drums at any point i want for a surprise fill. or whatever.

obviously the aim will be to follow the crowd reaction - to pump it up when they are getting hyped, to break it down a bit if they look tired, quickly end a track and move onto a new one if they look bored, or whatever.

i would imagine many live acts would have loops which sound very much like the CD, thats just what samples are like, i think the real test is whether the structure is live or just identical to the CD. also its nice to put elements from one tune into the "wrong" tune but obviously this is hard unless all your tracks are in the same key and tempo (which would make u pretty boring).

btw i think whoever pointed out the cost had a very good point... my hardware for live use cost me ... hmmm *counts* about £2900. thats NOT including flightcases and insurance (essential if you take it on the road!) the e-drumkit cost another £1400 (again, not including case or insurance). thats a helluva lot of money...           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

Wow. That has to be one of my first posts in the new forum. I can't believe I wrote that and I am going to see Son Kite play again in just a few weeks!

*thinking how much better Son Kite is going to sound a year and a half later in the desert*
          Both teams played hard
