Live set VS. DJ set

i think it probably has to do with the style of music too right?? the minimal sonkite haldolium sound is really nice to mix with loops and playing around with the drum machines and all  way to go i still want to hear skite or haldolium live one day (one day)..
With the other full on sound i dont know how easy is for a live set because the song is so set and defined while making it that does the act have time or abilities to mess with a complex song in real time::S also many layers and channels. Personally with fullon id rather hear a dj set than live set. the whole "(insert big name) LIVE" scene being better than the dj itself i do not understand
The soliptic and shpongle live set kind would be a totally altering awesome experience getting closer to the psy jam bands of before... nice one.. (disco biscuits any good?) |

Well, one definition of a 'live' set by an artist, however skewed, would mean that he is playing only his own tracks, including those twisted unreleased remixes (hopefully  ). A DJ set isn's limited to one artist's tracks.
One artist who does a nice live set (which means playing tracks off the laptop, while messing with them in real time, through pre-recorded samples, loops, fx, etc) and with a live drummer, is Onnomon (Soular Records and Spectral Recordings, US). I got to see him 4 times this summer, twice even in the same week at Burning Man, and, while I recognized the basic elements of some tracks, each set sounded completely different and fresh, which is damn hard to do and rather impressive.

Other liveActs that really do live?
Here I'am
I don't use software sequencers, not even for my new album.
All MPC-4000 based loops, the rest I do on the mixer.

I do this for 4 years now, and I can say that it was a hard work without a software sequencer to get my music sounding as it does now .
My New Album actually are "live-recordings" from my soundroom...
If I play live I can change whatever I want.. ususally I don't because I'm quite busy to get the songs how they are on the album, where I find them perfect.
What changes is the intensity of the feeling in my music according to the crowd... on my album it's medium, Played live it can be maximum.
The Live-Pretenders...
I think it's also about money... but not only..
its HARD WORK to play really live in that genre, especialy if you are alone, most live acts just are to LAZY to do that work. And don't want the risk of mistakes...
Cowards!
I think if it's just a "press-play" liveact they should define it as such, and therefore get as much money as a DJ.
Some even let hire Synths, just for decoration...

same goes for me..
i always prefer a good a flowing DJ set than a liveset , a good dj set if everything for me , good mixes and good tracks selection.

Thought I'd throw my two bob into this one. Love this subject on live act scams.
With Bigwigs and Tromesa we use the pc as a sequencer but also add some loops, samples, sounds and fx that are not in the original versions. We are still limited by the arrangement since it's running from a computer but can play around with the arrangement etc.
Ofcourse it's not as 'improvised' as an MPC for example but our music is not that loop based to make it easy to play around with 8bar loops for example.
And we don't mix our tracks continuously but play them more like each track separately.
But i do think that this is more live than some.........

maybe your live is not like others (i didnt heard) but there are really few that knows how to do it that it wont sound like u play your cd. so usually i also rather dj set. and ofcourse that is beside SON KITE. yah seb we noticed what u guys do. and never forget it! let's take a walk on the proogy side |

There's no q-n about it, nothing beats a GOOOOD live act... the thing is that now days, u cant hear a lot of them... its as if people got lazzy, or way to wasted to play.... 
But when i get lucky enough to arrive to an act, that u can hear, that the DJ enjoys the music he plays, and doesn't play it for the public, or by public request, thats beautiful, just plain old beautiful.... Take the Etnica set in eilat, about 3 years ago, unforgetable piece... 
Something that makes u feel the music, not only listen and jump up and down just cause of the high bpm 
All who do that, ROCK ON, UR DOING THE RIGHT THING!!!! And those who dont, just give up...
I think i'll start a political party with that DOGMA!
If u didn't took care of urself before, just let the DJ do that...

Hello all together!
Nothing is better than a real playing Live-Act, like Son-Kite. But no one is so live like the guys i´ve seen at VooV 2000. I can´t remember the name of the band, but they played only with original instruments. Yeah right, no seq. and so on, and it kicked me in my ass!! So, if anyone knows the name of the band,plzzz.
Also good Live-Acts are CON-Sequencer, Johann Bley, Klangstrahler Project (if they do a Live-Act, like in the past), and a lot of Acts can also play a good Live-Set, if they wanted!

In my opinion, the better psy-live that I heard till now is GMS in Portugal, at two months ago , with Bansi's father in the drums and the better prog live till now is Antix in the last Voov |
