I remember that the term for this kind of performance was "Live PA". That supposed to mean, Live personal appearance.

I thought it was live performing artist?

P.A.= public address.

The term comes from the traditional nightclub scene, and originated in two forms:
1) "PA", or "Personal Appearance". This meant that a reording artist would be making a personal appearance at the nightclub to sign autographs etc. Nightclubs would advertise the attendance of celebrities in order to boost their paying attendance.

2) "Live PA", or "Live Personal Appearance". This meant that the artist would be performing one or two songs live on stage during the night; this would usually be in the form of singing solo to a backing track.

Added confusion arises because of the common abbreviation for a 'Public Address' sound system, but the two acronyms have no other connection.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

The thing that gets me is how DJ's (and there are many that do very little) get away with this. Many times they don't even write music yet jump around behind the decks like they have done something special. I regularly see DJ's faking shit on the mixer.

I think it is just a trend to slate the live acts at the moment. I wish someone would start complaining about the state of DJing as well. Its really unfair in my opinion to not bring them into this debate.

Faking stuff on the mixer? Where the f does this happen at?

What's wrong with a non-producing DJ to be excited about their set (unless you're talking about a dj being really cocky about it or something, but I've never come across this in the psy scene)? I produce, but I know plenty of good djs who don't, and not usually because they just don't want to. Producing takes a LOT of time as you know, not everyone has time. Producing costs a good deal of money, which not everyone has. I'd rather have less people producing who are actually going to invest the necessary amount of energy into it, than more people doing it half-assed. There are also DJs who don't produce, but promote and organize parties, which takes a bunch of time and money too.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Calm down I am not saying it is not possible to be a good DJ and not produce. But DJing isn't hard, it really isn't. There is a lot of pretense with DJing as well.

What I am saying is lets not exclude them from this debate, lets make them as accountable. I have personally stopped going to parties over the last year as I am tired of hearing DJ's who can't even do the basics.

Sorry that is just my opinion. I would rather it wasn't bad but it is for me.

It just saddens me that DJs who can now put very little effort into their set or developing skills or even buying music can do this and get away with it while producers who put much more effort, time and money (their own hard earned money) into it for others to experience then get slated so quickly. We are all too quick to judge.

Just stop and think of the contribution a producer puts in. DJs get away with putting way less effort in.

I would be mad about that too if that were the case for parties where I'm from. Luckily it's not .

DJing fundamentals should never be a problem. I don't understand why someone would book a DJ to play that doesn't atleast have a basic skill set.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I am not sure promoters really know. And in most cases it isn't about skills. Some promoters are also DJ's and book people if they are likely to get something back in return.

Yeah, I know how that goes . If it's just the basics that's weird to book someone to get something in return who doesn't know the basics. Most people who have the ability to do these things have been at it long enough to be atleast decent at DJing, or so I would presume.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

One reason I love the area where I'm at (midwest US) is that people around here aren't afraid to tell people how they actually feel about their music/dj sets/parties. It's the only way to improve and not let your scene turn into a piece of crap. No one considers it mean or rude, it's all constructive criticism that we take to heart and actually work to improve on the next time. I remember how much I improved by posting mixes and getting honest feedback, not just people saying "that was good", or "I had fun listening to it".           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
