is electronic music, not rock or other style with live instruments. in electronic you cant perform 100% alive, maybe you can mix youre track, do some samples, make some effects or put a guitarr or a drum machine, some says tegma is a real live act but they just mix and play some sintetizers, i see hallucinogen playing in Mexico just with a midi controler, and if someone knows about playing live is Simon porford, the important thing is the pressence of the artist and his insterepetation of his art, his attitude, his corporal languaje and the estructure of the entire songs to make a real set. its teh same thing, who some people says djs are fakes because they play songs of others, the important thing is the essence, i can see hallucinogen just doing some sounds with his midi controler, but i know its a magniffciscent set, also i can see void playing guittars alive but i know is a fake. |

this discussion is so outdated.....
i would like to recommend a jean michel jarre concert
if you want to see pure electronic music live.
if its good music i dont care if the guy is playing or just saying hello to the chicks
by the way there are many projects that are so overrated by playing live and then you go and its just the ga playing some cliche guitar riffs,or some plastic electronic drums above(most of the times it add nothing to the result)
please this question seems so conservative, remembers me the old discussions with friends saying that electronic music is not music
is there any law saying that is forbidden to just press play in ableton live?or turn the sync button in traktor dj studio?if you dont like ,simply dont book
dont get me wrong but when you are seeing a live or anything, even if you are a producer,in that moment you are public, and as a public and listener, the results should matter more than the process but if you prefer to spend this time that could be magic, analysing with a sometimes very "clever technician "attitude every detail of the live its with you.
ahhhh. and now eat this:

The question here is calling things by there names...and if you´re only waving to the chicks then it's hardly a live-act!!!
And i really believe that the performance is a big part of the live concept!!! I really enjoy seing the guy/girl do His/Hers thing...or else why do you need a guy/girl behind the console?

about the topic question:
on a poster u can see DJSET and you can see LIVE just after the artist's name.
well, australians have been using a special term for some years now. it's called LIVELY.
i used to see that on posters and wondered what it means. it's very simple; it's when an artist is djing/playing without special live alterations his own released/unreleased traxx.
so i think we should adapt this term as well.

I remember that the term for this kind of performance was "Live PA". That supposed to mean, Live personal appearance.

PLS bring good dj's back to psytrance... and stop this "live" bullshit.

electronic live = arranging or playing in real time
I think a dj set normally is an electronic live: lots of tweaking, rearranging, etc... it's the oldest form of live in trance, and very valuable IMO... with cdjs or Synched Traktor or whatever (excluding pre-recorded sets of course, that's a shame). The DJ deserves the respect and the money for his show.
When a producer appears live to show their own work, even if it is to spin his tracks or to push the play button, I think is valuable too, although not more live than a dj if he is djing and less live than a dj if he pushes the play button of the laptop. Its valuable because you can see an artists work, his mind, his creation, and he invested much in it. A good way do enjoy a particular producer you like and to give him back the respect for his creative effort and genious. Of course this should have a diferent name like "live PA" or "lively".
When a producer acts rearranging tracks, playing synths or guitars or doing live fx tweaking, then I think it is as live as DJing and very respectful as the producer is doing "some of his creative shit" live and showing the audience his personal vibe.
A full liveact is something only some people would apreciate, the generation/play/mix of all the sounds of the tracks live... sometimes sounding more raw, but indeed totally organic. I would love to see more of these acts, but indeed would result in a diferent kind of trance, more oldschool, with more flow and less fancy-stylish breaks... for me it would be the perfect trance experience, dancing to music that is being generated/created/played in that moment in front of you by the genious creator.
I also think that a live where the producer doesn't have time to look at the audience and interact with it has gone too far... not enjoyable for the audience nor the producer IMO
my 2 cents
boom

the most minimal thing that I've yet to see anyone do live is control how many times each section of a song repeats.
That seems like it would be easy as hell to do and yet no one does it. |
