Labels and Artists: Make your full catalogue available in the digital download shops!

Judging from what Distelectronic says I hope now we can reach a consensus that digital sales are just as marginal as cd sales.....and I truly feel that putting tracks in digital format won't change sales by that big a margin....as if it's available for free many people will go for that option.
I guess labels should just take the initiative and put their own catalogues up for download on their websites. Why go through an online shop and have to deal with "this is too old", when one can use their own website to have a download section, and maybe sell each track at a slightly cheaper price.
I think I will definitely look into this.
Artists and labels should host their own tracks on their own websites...having a middle man to distribute cds or to distribute digitally is almost the same crap.           **************************************

2006 is indeed too old to release in digital.

This is crazy to me. Inventory costs are virtually nil. Why not stock old releases? The demand is not zero--and if there's enough older material online, combined sales will eventually become substantial enough to warrant making the effort. That's the principle of the Long Tail.

We do stock old releases and do our best to stock them on our affiliated shops, but we can't choose for them (other shops) on how they want to handle their own business.

The required HD space varies from one shop to another, so some will decide to go only with fresh releases, that's all we are saying.

We just released some albums from Absolute Ambient from 2002, 2005 and 2007, similarly for PsyberTribe Records, two releases from 2006. So please do not get us wrong, we gave you our input towards the experience we have in digital management.

The other important point, is that your own website alone won't do it all. Juno for example drives way more traffic than any label website. Cytopia is the same, they made their niche and they are well known and respected in Ambient and Psy scene.

There is no crap, it's a service, you chose to adhere to it or not. And Fria please, it's not personal, once again, we are giving input to help labels know how it all works and why some shops choose to take or not to take old releases. Nothing personal once again.

The other advantage to work with a distributor is that the label can concentrate on their releases and promotion way more. Other thing is that we have access to more shops than labels only, some shops do work exclusively with distributors. So really, that is a personal business choice. It has nothing to do with the quality of your releases or anything else.

Some even older albums in various styles are still very good and up to date even today, but once again, it's a business stand point. It's like saying, we will bring back old Beetles as they used to be, and will sell them at today's pricing. That's how some shops see it.

In conclusion, we welcome every label to join us at DistElectronic.com and put their --->entire catalog <--- regardless of the year it was released. All we tried to tell you, is the reason why some shops decide not to host older releases. Hoping you can make a clear distinction.

Best regards and Merry Xmas to all!

Hi ppl,

I have been observing this post since quite some time and it comes to my understanding that a lot of Labels and Artist maybe reluctant to go in for digital distribution due to many reasons of concerns, the major one being "Fair & Transparent Sales Accounting Practises" and "Untimely delivery of Sales reports" etc. between the Distribution & Labels, Distribution & Artists and finally between Label & Artists.

I have been into web-development since quite some time and would like you folks to note that, with proper web-application development & planning all these concerns could be overcome. Please pm me if anyone would be interested into looking at developing Digital Download Store solutions of various kinds and to fit various needs and budgets.

Cheers !!
