Piracy is indeed rampant. Through the years I met several people who copy ALL the music that they got paid to DJ at parties. Besides being ethically shallow, most of them played bad sets because they simply had ALL the music, no joke, all of it and obviously never had the time to listen to each track with care, and think hey this reminds of this other track, I should play them in the same set. Instead they just download albums at a time and did not appreciate nor embody the content of the music they were playing; which makes them crap artists.

I have seen this also. Purchasing tracks makes a big step forward in selection, as you will pay it you pay attention and listen carefully.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

Thanks for this really interesting thread..
You made me think and think again..

I would like to have some advices: don't you think that when a label is selling both of the formats like cd and downloadable tracks is making a mistake?
I mean.. If I'm promoting cd on the market, and at the same time i want to give the chance to people to download maybe just one track that they love instead of the whole album.. am I not fighting against myself?

Because when it's possible to download from the web maybe i will sell really less cd than expected having just physical releases.. is it clear what i mean?

I was checking Cytopia website.. it seems to be really good, and the fact that you can listen to a whole track is really nice from these guys!

People who buy CDs will buy CDs. People who download files will download files. If you do not make a legal download option available, people who download will just give their business to the MP3 groups. They will not buy the CD solely because it is their only legal option. They will just download it anyway.

So which digital download shop has the most variety available? I just went through two sites for the first time (i will not mention names) and the way in which the sub genres were organized was an utter mess. Mekkanikka in night psy category, Quasar in full on, i don't get it. Its these small things which make the difference to a customer and it was quite a put off to browse through several irrelevant files which i really shouldnt have had to go through. And also, why should i pay $6 + minimum from my pay pal account when i want a track which is worth $1.50. Don't think this is working for me so far.

Can someone post a full list of digital download stores here? In one list please.

Thanks and all the best

PS - Does beatspace offer digital downloads? If so, for all releases? Please shoot me a link if possible.

Well, actually Beatspace is not having digital releases..

It would be really nice if somebody that is buying digital release would make a list of the various web sites.. me I'm starting now and still I am not able to tell which one is it more comfortable and good.

For sure there will be more than one, but except Beatport, Cytopia and Ektoplazm.. which comes next?

Thanks..

I'm reviving this thread based on my recent experience with Cytopia.org
After much opposition to the whole digital download concept I finally decided to give it a shot. In essence I am a traditionalist so this was a huge step.
I contacted them, signed their contract, spent 3 days uploading our first 3 releases, featured in and after the year 2006.
The releases sat on their server for days, no sign of being posted online...emails went unanswered for longer than I am comfortable with but nonetheless...I was determined to get these releases online.
Finally I receive an email from the head honcho, stating that they prefer to have only recent releases. 2006 seems too far back, irrelevant of the quality of the music. After sending an email asking them to clarify what "recent" meant, I have had no answer yet. Now it's been a couple of months.
I am not open to putting a freshly released cd online immediately. I prefer a time lag in which people can buy the cd. Based on my experience and the general lapse in query response, I would have to say that I do not recommend Cytopia. What is with this whole concept of music getting old so quick??
How can one be open to new ideas if for example, Cytopia is not open to old releases??
Any new suggestions on the matter...I am looking for an online shop that will carry the "ENTIRE" catalogue and just not the spanking new fresh off the oven stuff.

Fria, I would recommend to contact an aggragator, a distributor, who would take you to all/most of the shops. There are quite a few of them around.
That's the best way to go- gets your catalog available and saves you a lot of accounting and negotiating work.           ---------------------------------------------

I'd suggest you get in touch with Ingrooves. As far as i know they r pretty much the most preferred online distributot. I would also suggest Distelectronic. I think they wld be quite interested in the full catalogue. Beatport is another one i wld suggest u give it a shot as well. Coz ive seen even older releases from good labels like NExus Media , PEak etc stocking up their catalogue as well as the new ones.

2006 is indeed too old to release in digital. Very few sales are registered. It's the same story as on CD, people want new and fresh tracks in majority. Then again, same story applies, releases in psy last 2-3 months, and they should be released within short delay after CD release or same time.

That above is business point of view. My personal point of view says that 2006 is not too old, but that's what the psytrancers decided, so read and listen to what they say.

Cytopia has enough background and knowledge in digital to know what they are talking about. Game is a bit different when we talk about old releases in digital. We talk about server space, so that has no age, and rather have new tracks that sell than old tracks that were good, but that the lovers decided were too old, and consequently do not sell anymore, or rarely.

For those who say there is an extra for WAV/FLAC, we got no choice, so much mp3 piracy out there, and I'd remind everyone that the work is the same on audio side, same time put into producing tracks, so as mastering and artwork. Only difference basically is that you do not pollute your environment with plastic cases or take away trees to print covers. Promotion work remains the same as well, if not even more, since digital era is only starting its life, still a lot of people to convince, but it's goin in the right direction as opposed to CD market which offers the same old thing since moreless 20 years, enough of the old music companies that want control over everything.

Be advised that most shops require at least WAV or FLAC, there ain't much stores offering mp3 only.

FLAC/WAV Shops

BeatsDigital (WAV)
Cytopia (WAV)
D-A-R-K (FLAC)
DownloadPlatform (FLAC)
DistElectronic (FLAC)
Juno Download (FLAC/WAV)
MusicZeit (FLAC)
Node3 (FLAC)

There are several more, but these have a lot of psy releases. I will confirm more shops with time as we concluded deals with a lot more shops recently.

Anyhow, main thing is to keep encouraging the producers, especially in these hard times.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to everyone as well!
