going threw psyshop i have noticed that allmost all the new releses are compiled by some dj or an artists, and i'm asking myself: is it possible that artists just don't have enough material to make an album? maybe the crowd wants that only the top tracks will be in the albums , thats y they're all compilations. can someone explain that?           like a dream,

I'd say it's because, for an artist, it requires a big effort to create an album. It's much easier just to write a track and sell it to the latest new label that pops up wanting to release music, and then do the same thing again. Not only does it take 9 or 10 times longer to make 9 or 10 tracks for an album, but (in my opinion) an album should be more than just the sum of the parts...it's a work of art in itself, or maybe a journey.

Also, if a label is doing it's job properly then it should be investing a lot of time and money in promoting the artist, helping to seek out bookings etc. It's a lot harder for a label to to convince an artist that it has the patience and experience to do that, than it is to collect a bunch of tracks together from various artists and send them off to the factory after mastering.

The reason is that Compilations have taken over the music business. How many people really buy artists albums (CD's) compared to compilations?

I see people complaining over and over again about artist CD's saying that there's only 2-3 "good" tracks on the CD's. No wonder more and more artists prefer to release tracks on compilations. It's also quite evident that most artists dont make much money out of a CD. They might even pay money to get it out = using a lot of time making the CD for nothing = small sale.

Of course there also might be many artists that are new and therefore maybe dont feel confident enough to sit down and work on a full lenght CD.

Personally I will always release albums simply because I feel it's much more me to do that than to release countless "Hit & Run" tracks on compilations.

And to those complaining that only 2-3 tracks are "good" on artist CD's. Ever thought about that the music on an artist CD is as it's surposed to be = Not HIT after HIT but quality work that the artist have used a lot of time on.

Call me old-fashioned, but when I think about my favorite releases I always come up with a lot more artist albums than compilations, if I had to list a top ten then I doubt there would be any compilations in it at all. This applies to all musical genres I listen to.

Don't get me wrong, I like some compilations, but for me a good artist album is always better, maybe because its more than just a sum of the parts as I eluded to above.

if u see a 1 or 2 tracks that u like on a compilation and u want to hear some more from the artists who made those tracks and there are no albums from those artists cause now it all compilation... would u buy this compilation for this 2 tracks? or would u prefer to download them from the net?           like a dream,

i also think that for a label there is a bigger chance of failure releasing an artist album rather than a compilation, cause releasing an artist album either the public likes the artist itself or that album won´t sell, while in compilations one person might not like 2 or 3 names in that specific compilation but becuase one likes the rest of the artist, would buy the compilation.

another thing about compilations is the possibility to start releasing new artists cause few labels would risk to release a full album of a new artist that few people have heard about.

I also think that is very good that we have
compilations in that way we can hear some of the fresh dj that appearing every day...
some better that outhers, it´s true but it´s a way to expose the first tracks that they made...

The first tracks ANYONE makes should never be inflicted on the public - especially not in a way that means you have to pay to hear them. This is one reason why there's so much shit music around - people assume that their first tracks are good enough to release. There are probably exceptions, obviously (I don't know who they are but I can tell you I'm not one of them!) but please, if you're reading this, don't assume you're one of them.

I was thinking about starting this exact same thread the other day. The amount of compilations around at the moment is unbelievable. Maybe sites like Psyshop should have a different section for them because it's easy to miss 'proper' album releases when you are wading through all these glorified promos and samplers.           Am i the only one who believes in solipsism?
