I went to a party recently and had kind of a hard time getting into the sound. and its not that i don't dig the music...I'm sitting here listening to Bamboo Forest on vinyl and quite enjoying it. which is why I just started thinking about this possiblity.

when I was more active in the scene I think I remember that most trance dj's only played waves, but I don't know if that has changed?          http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

Nah, if you play mp3's at festivals, you shouldn't be playing at festivals. Even at small parties, weeklies/monthlies I only play WAV. Most other DJ's I know feel the same. There are a small few who hold out, but I've seen a lot of the most stubborn people switch to lossless eventually.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

I wont not play a track just because the only copy I have is a mp3. If its in the 320 range I dare anyone to tell me they can hear the difference on a party PA.
But in general always try to get lossless.           www.harmlessprankster.bandcamp.com

I can! Every time... And here is why, the compression format of mp3's is lossy, one of the reason why kids with mp3 players keep fucking up their ears, the music is as loud as the wav file but perceived as less loud, so they crank it up and the rest is history now imagine that on a 50k watt rig instead of some lousy earphones... it will ALWAYS be perceived less loud than the wav...

mmmmm....i did not know that, but it makes sense. also makes me suspect even further that these young dj's i heard at the party were playing MP3's. I wore earplugs the whole night and still had ringing in my ears when I got home.           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

May not be any evidence to this but I kinda think people that play MP3s at parties have less respect\love for the tracks they're playing than those who take the trouble and/or expense to acquire lossless versions.

I know when I really like something, I'll go out of my way to get the best format I can. Why wouldn't I? Especially when I'm going to share it with others.

Wav all the way, some tracks in flac & maybe one mp3320 in a set... But If anybody tells you, that ohh I heard the diff when you mixed in the mp3 320 right after wav in ur set, most likely they weren't havin fun. Best thing to say then is 'thank you Mr. Know it all'. just sayin

Its has been tested countless times that we cant hear the difference between good quality mp3 vs wav. The results are always 50/50 in blind tests. You can try and tell me otherwise all day long, people that are set on a point of view cant be told otherwise even when all the evidence is right under their noses.

sorry thats bull.. would love to see any of that countless tests there aren't any..

Sure, you can hear it the difference, some people can even not hear it because of that reason they get headache from hearing mp3 that's not joke . Than the very young generation that grow with mp3 and overcompressed loudness with compressed mp3 masked music got other ears and other habits. In that cases it is possible maybe. My really old audio engineering teacher from times of my studies, to many a real audio expert, always preached how he got headache anytime he hear mp3 and that he cannot hear it even for a minute, if he hears it he immiediatly gets pains and has not one minute of mp3 at all, for some people its terrible mp3 at all, really hurts so to say.

The difference is easy. Even on small headphones.

Logicaly seen it really forces our brain to reconstruct that missed depth/compressed shit resulted in lacks and gaps. Almost like a residual effect.

I will dig them up if you can't be bothered searching for it.

A very low quality mp3 is a different story, the program that encodes it makes a difference as well.

I stand by the research ive seen that a good quality mp3 is mainly placebo.           www.harmlessprankster.bandcamp.com

don't agree on this at all, tried it many times, at home sound system, in the car, all prety decent sound systems... and the difference is crystakl clear..wel if i play more instrumental music than is harder to tell the difference but with electronic music you miss body of the sound. its not about volume... and mp3 means to me illegal in most of the case, or ripp off from an artist i appreciate his music. so i take his music talk good about him but rip him off No man. if i dont have the money orm effort to get losless/wav files than i will save up and get it, or otherwise would not play in with stolen music arround.
