Hmm... so what does it mean if full-time artists and DJs don't have enough extra money lying around to buy music after rent, food, hard drives, and other necessities are paid for?

Currently, the only thing I am doing is music.... It's not easy in the least bit though. If you are used to creature comforts you had when you were working full time, then it's going to be difficult. My main reason behind doing music full time now, was simply time... Previous to 2006 I had never left my country and I really wanted to travel and see life outside of the US... For me to do so required me to be flexible enough to leave for a month or more at a time, sometimes with very little notice...
I tried to live in San Francisco while doing this... Didn't work too well. Now I live in Milwaukee, WI and I think I've managed to find a balancing point where I have a place with cheap rent, that I don't mind not being at. For me, I couldn't see myself doing anything else other than this at this current juncture in my life.

If you are expecting to be comfortable doing just music, I suggest you get a part time job or something so you can at least pay your rent. If you wanna make music for the sheer enjoyment of it... do it in your free time and see what happens... When I got started making music, I never thought that I would ever be where I am now, doing this solely.... For me this was a hobby that ended up demanding more time from me than a regular job... and I wouldn't have it any other way....           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

it preety much depends where you live
costs of living vary greatly between USA & EU to let's say Asia, South America, East Europe etc.
The thing about life as a psytrance musician is that you get the same amount of money for a gig (international one) whether you live in London or Tokyo or any other cheap city. So you can live like a poor bastard in a rich country or like a rich bastard in a poor country.
