+1..start writing music..a few weeks/months on your home speaker system or headphomes and if you still are serious about this thing/hobby/profession and just if it really gives you joy and pleasure, then think about grading up your spaceshuttle..
Music equipment is not cheap at all..so its quite a lot of money to invest...and just a nice pair of speakers won`t do the trick..
Its an expensive and addictive gear-porn habbit..hehe
If you enjoy the thing and want to learn about frequencys/sounddesign and tight bass responce... you will have a great time and no girlfriend lol...since you spend all the time improving your skills  until you rock a rig with your own sound

Might be too late now:
I had the smaller ones from M-Audio until just right now. (BX5MA)
I had them for nearly two years but was never satisfied with them...the weak lows were the biggest problem and I ended up doing most of my stuff with headphones again
Now I just plugged in my new ones (yamaha HS80M) and man...its a big difference. I would advise to save up more money and buy better monitors.

i agree... but i wanna add that tecnology also helps to make the producer...
if u can buy good stuff there s no reason to buy below the avarege product... monitors specialy...
