Hi Folks ,

i m just about to finish my studio ,and i m gonna treat acoustic really good ...
i ve already have a pair of Genelec 8010a ,witch are quite small ,and very week in low end definition .
what would you advise me ;
-to get a sub from genelec ...worth 1200 $
-to get different monitors with lower end definition for same budget .

thanks           soundcloud/roakanan.com

you can go for the sub.... but it will be a tricky thing to set up correctly.

my advice is to get a pair of bigger monitors for your space like the dynaudio bm5a or focal cms 65           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

if you have money to upgrade monitors might be the thing to do ,depends if you like the sound of the genelec and if u get mix that translate with them.

Upgrade, then you can use your Genelec as a secondary setup to make sure your mixes are OK. If you get a sub, it'll be harder to setup and you won't have any backups.

thanks !!
ok so i think that s what i should do ...upgrade

PoM...no my mixes don't translate good at all /o/

actually i had a view on the
-Dynaudio BM6AMkII 1300$(BM6A=1700$!)
and-Adam A7X 1400$(the most attractive rigth now )

as mentioned by Orange the focal cms 65 1600$
are tasty too ...but expensive

it's a little over what i wanted to pay for the monitors . all those monitors also exist in smaller/cheaper ...hum .what are your toughts on that ;all those models have a smaller-cheaper sister ....worth pulling the extra 400 $ for 3x4 m room ???

the thing is ....where i live i can t ear them before buying .have to order from the net ...so i ll make my definitive choice from advices i'm getting from you guys .

thanks a lot ..

i think the focal are more expensive in usa with the euro beeing strong not sure it s a good deal but if you can try bm6a and the adam ,i think you can t really go wrong in that price range..pick a pair you like the sound, learn it inside out..
there is genelec too, never used them but i would love to try them, the 8040a and there is probably lot of other great monitors from less known brands..

Thanks PoM but as i just posted ,i can't listen to them before buying ,or i' ll need to buy a plane ticket too ...

i have already Genelec 8030 A ,(sorry type the wrong ref in my first post) .
they are quite small ,but impressive ....when i bought them i was looking for really close monitors to use wherever i could work (untreated rooms ) that i could carry easy .really poor in bass tho but amazing mid and high clarity .
now i m just finishing my new homestudio ,and i need bigger speakers .and of course more definition in lows .

i also still have my first ever monitors ;Alesis Mk1 ....and they suck /o/

it seems that those Focal would be a good choice ...
i ve read weard posts about Adam A7 lack off low end ,so i don't want the same kind of trouble i already have with my Genelecs .
regarding the Dynaudio ,also ppl say they colour too much the sound .

not read anything rude about the Focal cms 65 and they said by many to have a very good definition in the bass ....

i d like some more comments regarding those Dynaudio bm6A serie and differences soundwise between the regular one and the MKII .anyone knows ???

the adam a7 have not much low end but they corected this with the new X serie it seems.. but not sure if it s good low end never used them it s just what i read here and there... it seems there is some issu with the port making some noise too.

bm6a and mk2 i used both can t really tell it was not in same room..got good mix on both dunno wich one better, my friend say mk2 maybe a bit better he used both now for years... on the net many say mk1 better..i guess it s tate ,1700 dollar not a bad price so i think i would get the mk1 at tha price, here they cost 2000 euro almost like focal twins.

the room still what matter the most, i have used bm6a in a small shity room at a friend ,trying different place and it was impossible to get a good low end(and usually their low end is good and translate great) ,my friend ended up stoping using them and mix on his beyer headphone, mix were way better balanced .

cms65 are good but the sound is not very impressive but they get the job done.. i bought them without trying them first ,when i got them i listened musics to break them in i thought to send them back.. then i tryed a mix great translation kept them. in my room i think the low end start to fade at around 55/50 hz and i dont have much informations on the sub frequencies when the sub is bypassed , they dont have big low end but it s fast and tight (all this is a lot dependent of the room and place of monitors and listening position)

imo it s more about personal taste all capable of doing good mix .. give a try and send them back if you dont like, buy to a store that accept return .

I have the bm6a mk1. The sound is pretty honest and really dry. But I guess that makes sure you work hard to get a good mix. Recommended! My mixes were alot better than with the previous monitors I had (mackie hr824).           soundcloud.com/supergroover

thanks a lot ...

i ve found the mkII for 1300 $ here ;

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/490879-REG/Dynaudio_Acoustics_995_002211_BM6AMkII_150W_6_9.html

pretty tempting
but it sounds like mki better ,they also more expensive wich would go that way too .

Pom ,

you have both mki and focal cm65 ,am i right?
and rather go for the dynaudio ?
also, about positioning in the room any advises ???

actually i ve put my desk at aprox a tird of the room i m sitting near the middle of the room ,and my monitors are just at the back of my desk ,aprox 1m from the back wall .

i ve not started acoustic treatment but will be my next step for shure ....

again thanks /o/

Should be a good position. Best way to find out is to walk around the room and get a feel for how even the bass is. Change the position of the monitors until you have a place where the bass is most even.

i don t have both but i have used bm6a, i think in the low end they may be better than the focal,i have afraid with the cms you find them lacking a bit in the low end and you want some so...maybe get the bm6a and later sell your genelec if they become uselss , buy focal cms 50 or small adam like a7 ,they will contribute well to dynaudio sound but just with bm6a you can make already great mix.
dynaudio + adam or focal to get a bit more clarity in the mix, more modern clean sound = win for me just my experience..

focal solo6 might be worth checking too but a bit more expensive than your price range
