I got this a couple of months ago - its a complete dub/reggae version of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and its by East Star All Stars.

I think its fantastic, a bit variable, but overall so well done that by the end I'd forgotten the original wasn't a dub album in the first place.

Anyone else got it - and if so what do you think of it?           bass culture

Hi, when i first played it I thought yes and no, good and bad, but when I had it on the sound system over and over again I got more and more into the whole of it. The first 8 or 9 tracks are exactly the same as the original, followed by 4 or 5 versions and bonus tracks.

Hope its not too over the top to post this - but its a review I wrote for Big Issue In The North Magazine. Thought it would give an idea of the album and save me writing the words out again!

"Its not often you get to hear a prog rock / dub reggae crossover and if anyone offered you one you might, quite justifiably, run a mile. Well, just hang on a minute. A reggae collective from New York has just put Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon through the prism and out the other end has come the red, gold and green of a superb roots cover that faithfully echoes the original. This is born of a parallel universe where King Tubby produces Dave Gilmour and Lee Perry teaches Roger Waters about logic. Making the most of dub’s rich rhythms and layered instrumentation, long guitar riffs are replaced with horns, melodicas and DJ toasting. Dancehall and drum n bass styles also make appearances and it is so well conceived that you may be forgiven for forgetting the original wasn’t a reggae album in the first place."           bass culture

I quite enjoyed the album - but would love to have heard a proper dub version of the original - ie if someone got the original tapes and messed about with them - although appreciate that this is highly unlikley to happen for copywrite reasons.

I know that Unity Dub disagrees with me on this - but personally I thought Dub Side of the Moon was a bit of a rock version of reaggae & it would have been great to hear some reggae producer do it - though not sure how big Roger Waters & co have ever been in the Kingston dancehalls. Maybe a job for the Mad Professor??

(to be brutally honest the album brought Dread Zeppelin to mind!!)

although I'm open to persuasion otherwise...

Interesting you think its a rock version of reggae as the Easy Star All Stars are a reggae outfit - musicians, producers and a label - rather than rockers trying to 'do' reggae. I think Dub Side was their first own production. So seem to fit your bill.

Here's their website if you want to check them out

Thats interesting - I see Frankie Paul is on the album - I'll have to give it another go.

On a tangent - a lot of pop, soul & R&B hits have had reggae make overs - but not that many rock ones - so what other classic albums could do with a reggae or dub version?
