.. So how would you connect these two factors, big audience and psy trance into a linear function - it is simply not the best working economical concept.

most musicians make music just to make money.
in the beginning of their careers , they may think that there's another purpose, but after a while, they make music to just please the crowd in a way that works.

in psytrance, the more psychedelic the music is, the less the audience understands it.

about music theory. what do you need to make a dance tune? you need to be in key. your can repeat the same chord all over, do one note drops. play a cheesy simple melody.
poor compositions. enhanced by the right kick or bassline.

I've been doing music for 26 years and never studied theory, so my answer would be "nothing".           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Yesterday we decided to try out "from scratch" without any "music theory", just with z3ta synth and 6 oscilators. After 10 hours sound design with this short loop of a few seconds, it became one of the most psychedelic tunes that ever came out of my DAW - very flexible for further development and really weird. I think I will now start to user less "music theory", only for the overtones and keeping things clean....
....Mind blowing. Probably this forum is one of the most valuable places in the whole internet to see more of this process. Unfortunately the search is not so prolific and sorting out the info is difficult...

Yup, as long as you know your way around your DAW and synths, you're good to go. Although some basics wouldn't hurt to help!

In the end, it's just practice, practice.. and practice.

On a serious note, some weeks after my last post, I can say that even using 6 oscillators and 6 LFOs changing only the transpose and the octave with different modes of oscillation and exploring the cutoff and the resonance, still requires some music theory. At least in order to recognize a problem with dirty noisy or distorted sound and to know that you could fix it if you change the transpose mode of one of the oscillators - still music theory is needed.

I got this one in a library recently, it is good at least to improve my english of music theory, because it was always a week point. But for the oscillators, I think imroving knowledge in compressors could be a better way to move further. But i do not know....Still exploring

stay in key .., train your ears, it takes time there is a structure that can make life easy 1 nine bar kick and bass add hihat on 9th bar on 17th add snare and chh hats add a sweep from bar 25 or make a break down.. main part and hook at 33 bars can be a melodic break or nice fat beat that attracts the audience to 97bar repeat the proccess from 1 33 bars but add new sounds layers... thats a simple stucture but it should get you started...

1 tip try make your loop round that means,, eg a nice 9/17bar loop that sounds perfet when looped + groovy +has some drive
2 tip avoid copy and pasting
3tip bass and percussion variations loops just practice

4 tip the are no limits
