Preplanning or improvising doesn't have any bearing on how good a set is, it's all about the music that comes out of the speakers. DJs who think less of another dj because they plan out a set are the ones with the ego problem, not the guy behind the decks smiling . I used to think that way when I first started djing, but I've since realized how stupid of a notion it is. We all have the tools to do it and in the end you should do it however you do it best and play the best set you can. Nothing else matters.
I get the same sense of satisfaction from playing a great planned set as I do from an improvised set.

It does not help smiling if you playing tracks the crowd don;t like!
If you get to a country where you don;t know the crowd (seen it MANY MANY times here in Cape Town) the DJ sometimes struggles.
Now even if he had prepared a set, it still might not have worked.
This all depends on what you play i rate.
If you playing prog, there is a lot more scope to be able to twist the track up and do a lot more.
When you playing Night time Fullon, its a bit harder to do this.
So you tend to only be able to play the tracks themselves without being able to change much of the way you would mix them.
So you really need to get to know these tracks to find out what works with which track.
I can safely say, that i have played many sets unprepared, that have worked well.
I left feeling OK about the set and satisfied.
But the times that i have prepared, the sets were exceptional.
I left feeling exceptional.....and the crowds response was exceptional.
So....many this is why i lean towards a prepared set.

I almost always come prepared, with a list, but more often than not i find myself deviating from it according to the crowd and to my own personal feel

I'll choose a big list of tracks and probably play from them, but I always bring more than the list, just in case.
I used to plan my sets, it got really annoying. It's more fun to feel it out and go with what feels natural, lookin through the cd book and finding the perfect track to drop is a great feeling.
Some of the responses on here are really ridiculous, criticizing what sort of faces the dj makes and such.

I've got a nice outdoor gig this saturday and not only am I going to make a list this time, but I'm going to make it have two or maybe three branches that will split from which track I start with and if energy is hyper or grooving!
I'll let you know what happens with it!
hope nobody criticizes my smug grin

the worst thing at the party is when so-called dj's think they are "da shizz" and start creating their sets on the fly thinking they have flow cuz some chemicaly messed up people still "dig it" at 8:00 am!
imo improvised sets are state of the art in this business but to be honest - there are only a few dj's who can really do it and make you "trance" on the dancefloor - my 2c

Definitely..although anyone that can manage to do an improvised live set has earned that arrogance.
I still don't think it's a great idea to have a planned set and stick to it regardless of how the crowd responds to it though. Somewhere between the two would be a lot better.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

Agreed.....or you would need one of them protective perspex screens to shield you from the rotten tomatoes!
I have not had a crowd turn on me yet....nor would i want it!

Who says you can't mix in key with an improvised set? Either memorize or bring with you a circle of fifths and write down the key/bpm to all of your tracks and there you go! |
