I started to djing not long time ago and normally when I'm going to have a gig in a club I prepare the set before at home listening carefully every song I want to play to know to the order of the tracks, trying do something with sense in the whole set...(not puting tracks just for put)I saw in many festivals important djs just trying to play like greatest hits songs, and this is not for me trance music..., trance is like to get a vibe with all the tunes together, this is what I think.
Ok what I do is not professional at all but I'm going to explain; I use to put all the tunes in order and with the time I want to play...,like this:
1 Kindzadza 6:34 - 1:23
2 Digital talk 7:11 - 2:40
3 Hokus Pokus 5:05 - 0:39
...so like this I know exactly when I want to play every song in that set. For example, the tune of Kindzadza started at 6:34 and when the song arrive to 1:23 I'll play the other one because this is he part I like to mix with the other of Digital Talk that starts at 7:11 and at 2:40 to the end I'll play the next one of Hokus Pokus that starts at 5:05...
I hope to don't look like an idiot with this kind of question, but would be apreciated to know is some djs do the same...,or ther kind of tricks...
all the best

One giant problem with that method: You aren't adapting to the needs of the audience at all.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I take my current stash bag, with either the dj slip with BPMs or a photocopy of them from the cover, and a brief note to help me (e.g forst, dark, glitch, ambient, dub, suomi etc.)

If it is gonna be pretty dark I have a LED torch that straps to my forehead, it doesn't effect anyone else but let's me see everything in my case and the dex.

I only pre-prepare by chillout sets or opening sets. even then, it usually changes heaps on the day of the event due to the crowd.

For me it's not always abotu what I want to play, it's about making the crowd smile playing tracks that I also get a kick out of Hence why I am always updating my stash bag to have my top 100 cd's on me at all times           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

first of all showing off is wrong in the first place, go be a rockstar if you wanna be cool (my inner taste ,lol )

yes you present what you like no doubt, but it should not reflect what you like and think that works just because at home it sounded great... so forget about preparing
and writing times down .
go and be inspired feel free to the moment and let go of your
limitations!!!

i always suprise myself with playing tracks on parties
that i hardly listen or like when im at home
but the right moment on the party it just makes sense to play them

also the concept of writing times down is wrong and limits you again from being free and open to the moment

FREEFLOW and LET GO OF YOUR EGO !!!!

for me preparing sets takes the fun out of it
i did it a few times because i was nervous to play in front of big crowds (like first loveparade) but i gave the concept up pretty fast

what i use is a list with tracks i like and would like to play
but hardly play them mostly anyway guess a old habit

the only thing i prepare at home is the intros i play for my djset (samples and sounds) but thats the first two minutes
and from there its all about what comes to mind

i understand in the beginning you want show what you can do and what music you like but i still believe the best djs
are the one you hardly recognize that they are there!
because you are having too much fun dancing

so if you wanna be famous be a rockstar if you wanna be a great dj let go of all the expectations and limitations
and give the people the best time you are able to deliver

but perhaps thats just me and you dotn give a shit about that ,i have to say im old school

Hmm I have to say that it is good to prepare a well programmed set but also be prepared for the crowd now digging it and then you should be able to try and serve up to the crowd something that matches your taste and theirs in an improvised fashion

The truth as usual is somewhere in between the 2 polar opposites

EDIT: Personally I think if the set is well programmed with the upcoming party in mind it will sound amazing!!! Whilst freestyling you cannot prepare as intricate moves and change overs!!! I have heard some amazing pre-programmed sets that crowd completely got into!!! Hvaing said that I have also heard some awesome freestyled sets that took everyone to the next level! I have also heard freestyled sets and pre-progammed ones that completely sucked

There is no right or wrong really, just experiment and you will keep evolving and getting better!!! Good luck!!!

Sorry what am I saying, I completely love intelligently pre-programmed sets!!! So chefchaouen keep going with them.
I totally dig what you mean about giving the crowd some of you "inner taste" as you call it Dj is a person, he or she is not a juke box that plays crowd's favourite tracks all night, they are there to take the crowd on a journey through their own mind and showcase to them the musical trip, how different tracks connect and compliment each other. So keep doing what you are doing man!!!
But yes, also be prepared if the crowd is completely not digging you then you may need a swift change of scenario and might need to go down a different path!!!

One way to handle it might be to have a notebook with you with some brief notes on every track you like to play out with a cue point and a length of beats that you have to mix it in for (say start at 1:29 and mix for 64 beats, then complete switch over). This way you can bring out heaps of tracks you want and go down different paths for your sets if the crowd really needs you to.
There is nothing wrong with that IMHO, it's simply called doing your homework

And don't listen to closely to people telling what to do and what not to do, take it all with a grain of salt and work out your own way by experimenting with your sets and see what gets the crowd going and how you can interact with people on the dancefloor by first luring them in and then taking them to new places in their minds

Good luck!!!          -------------- Dark & Twisted Night Psy --------------

so if thats the case you could actually record a set at home, bring the cd and press play.. or even better.. make a huge wavfile and go for it as liveact

Hehehe well that is pretty much what some live acts do isn't it?

Yeah you could do that, but that would not be fun? Jut like some musicians/singers could prerecord and lipsynch, and some do, but that does not mean that ones that do sing/play live don't prepare/write songs earlier before a show, does it?           -------------- Dark & Twisted Night Psy --------------

If you know your tunes well, you don't need to mark seconds and BPMs.
I mean at the end of the day you do play tracks you really like, and tracks you really like, you listen to a lot at home, so you know where the important bits to mix in/out are.
One thing that is worth preparation though, is finding out which tunes will yield nice key mixing...either the same key or simply a nice progression during your set.

selecting tracks to play for your set can be good if you plan to plan a set, but flow needs to be determined on the go, depending on how the dancers react to the act IMO!

haha it's funny because most of the psy-trance live acts I saw just press play and dance...,so no live act at all...,better to call them homework act
but all my respect to who try to improve and do good job on the stage

I guess after reading all of this, I think it would be alright to plan a set, but I would still suggest bringing some backup tunes.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?
