because most of the producers are not musicians. a musician can play live. a dj can play live.

i think in other scenes (eg. hip hop) the dj can be very creative but in psytrance, there really is not that much to it...beat mixing is pretty easy, and then its just a matter of knowing your music. And when you are a producer and play your own tunes, you know the music very well, because you've sat down and spent a week writing the thing. To me, being a psytrance dj is the equivalent of being in a covers band ie. playing other peoples music...producing is where the real talent is at. There is room for both, but give credit where credit is due!

i agree completely here and would like to add that many Djs recieve more credit then artists..For example, when a DJ plays a good track at a party ,ppl say WOW that guy is good but who is actually behind that track very few know, probably this happens because Dj's charge less then Live Acts ..anyway it still comes down to the fact that DJ;s cant survive without artists and vice versa...

I've often wondered about this very issue and why producers/"live acts" are valued more than DJs in psy - which is quite the reverse for most other forms of dance.

I think a lot of it is history - psy trance is CD based which lends itself to albums & so "acts". Also in many parts of the world the psy trance crowd has progressed from rock/metal music, without listening to much other dance music, and so is comfortable with the "live" act format. And as its cheaper for promoters to get the "live" act to spin some tunes as well - so crowds are used to hearing very average DJs.

Personally I've seen lots of very competent DJs - but its rare for me to get blown away by a psy trance DJ (Tristan is an obvious example of someone with the extra quality). Maybe its the accepted norm that you should just play the tracks and not do much to them that leads to a lot of DJs sounding the same - so the obsession with killaaaghh unreleased tunes to stand out.

The DJs I have heard who do really work tunes and the mixer have often come into psy trance from other genres that place a higher value on DJ skills.

Anyway - I'm just waffling now - so will stop!

I think everyone has its place. I said it b4 it is a matter of inspiration and a sense of awe in the dancefloor. A DJ or a producer are both artists and it is up to them to create the excitement in the dancefloor when playing live.

Now, I do believe that a musician needs a longer training, not only in music theory, performance, but also in sound engineering. I think the training behind a producer is a much harder road than DJing. There is no doubt about this, but sometimes that does not translate in instant dancefloor energy.
