This is just a popularity context.
It is ridiculous to assume these are best in anything else than being known by huge amount of people and/or being able to sent spams to millions of people asking for votes.

Just a popularity contest for you perhaps. There are many people that their career depends on that piece of paper.

Can you please enlight me with examples of such people whose careers depend on that piece of paper instead on their habilities/skills as musicians/DJs??

^^he is now in the current search for top-end arabian horses , and obviously its the best place to get one

2 Tiesto
3 John Digweed
4 Paul van Dyk
5 Sasha
those dj's have huge reputation in the last 10 years anywayz , its not the pole made them big , only after they are famous they got this spots

anywayz many of those artist just hire hackers to vote many times without getting cought

but sure if any of us was in the first top 10 he would be very happy and loaded with gigs till next winter

the higher the position you get, the higher your booking price may go, as simple as that. this top list is a powerful marketing/promotional tool.           SPQR

It is a popularity contest, but at the same time people's careers do depend on it as well. If you are on the list of the dj mag popularity contest then you will get more gigs and get paid more. These guyz make more than just about any other dj or producer of electronica than anyone and being on the top of these popularity contests help. The sad thing about it is, that now like full on stated, you get spammed to death to vote for them. In some cases they have caught them cheating, having had people vote for them 50 times from the same IP address. It seems to be pretty obvious to me that having an aggressive promotion campaign, a little bit of money and a wince of some djing ability is the requirements needed to crack the list...

Still think it is promotional bullshit, and waiting for someone to answer this:
