Differing styles of music in cities in the US & Canada?

The topic of musical diversification was briefly touched upon before in this thread: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/52628/forum/28

But I was curious as to the particular styles or sub-genres of psychedelic trance that are most in demand, or most popular these days in various psy-friendly cities throughout the us and canada. What style of music are people most excited about? I know we can generalize and say east coast= more progressive, west coast= more full on...but I guess I'm looking to get a bit more specific than that, and maybe hear from people involved in the less well-known psyscenes...           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

In Canada I would say full on is much more popular in Montreal while progressive / techtrance is more popular in Tonronto.

I'm not sure about what the situation is in other cities, but I think San Francisco can be summed up into two camps: the first being the ones who enjoyed the rock band Genesis better when Peter Gabriel was still a member and the other one that really likes Phil Collins.

Some people in Colorado like deep progressive psy, some like dark pounding stuff, some like full-on.. Crowd taste is a very, very relative and changeable thing. I've found that they'll love and dance to anything if the DJ is good and knows how to keep the music interesting.

Too much full-on and no prog makes Homer something something..

In Canada / Vancouver.
More fullon, sometimes very good progressive paries from deliria group.
And dark nights from Psycotic Shiva family parties.
Boom!

clarification for SF.(though Ghreg your answer left my holding my sides for quite a bit last night)
There are 2 skools here really

the full on guys which tend towards the more driving, edgy full on,
and the dark /punk rock trance group.

The dark group likes there stuff as it more psychedelic, but there is a certain rawness to it, that is somewhat akin to garage band punk rock. Production quality may not be the best, but thats how they like it. This group seems to be have a lot of post-industrialists in it This is the group that tends to like Goa Gil, and i think that has alot of influence

The full on group, plays the more cleaner sounding but less psychedelic trancy stuff. Alot of the old school raver crowd and those that have been into other "techno" (used as an umbrella term) genres hang out amongst this crowd

Cheeze is not tolerated in SF. You never hear locals play much Chemical Crew, GMS, 1200 Mics etc etc...

OT: People tolerate you... Don't sell yourself short! (Sorry, a little inside humor there)

There are a few people that like the more progressive sound as well though.. For instance the Psybooty records crew of heads all are into the more prog sounding stuff. But in general, the pop trance sounding stuff isn't as prominent here in SF.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Its tolerated, if it wasn't 1400 people wouldn't have showed up for Astix (agreed some showed up for Aqua-Sky and others that night but still, killer turn out) and acts like GMS wouldn't be in such high demand.

SF is setup so that most parties have darkish music, most promoters push this sound and so do most DJs. Infact, I think I'm the only one here is SF who plays Astrix, GMS, etc...atleast consistently (3 years now?). Maybe some of the Astral Psyientists? (I can't spell today )

The descriptions of the trance scene here are pretty spot on so far, just had to say that given the chance people will and have danced their asses off to the "cheeze" (the quotes being the emphasis in that ).

Hope your all having an awesome day!

Toronto is somewhat diverse - there are both tech/progressive nights and full-on parties (currently there is almost an equal balance between the two sides). What is missing is any dose of the wacky suomi style, funky stuff, old school, and chill out on the psychedelic side...

I'd just like to say that LA organizers aren't all into sticking to any one style or lacking any one style, they care more about flow. Appropriate music for the time.

Montreal is all about suomi. You absolutely never hear full-on at parties here.
Not.           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

I've played parties in L.A., Calgary AB, and Nelson BC, and have noticed that the further north you go, the darker they like it...but I am generalizing quite a bit.

asheville likes it hard and pounding. peak hour style lasts all night usually... sometimes we warm it up with some proggy/techy but for the most part we hit it around 140-144 with a darkish edge... each dj has thier own style, so sometimes it gets more deep, epic and morning style as the morning creeps in... but as a generalization, these seem to be running rampant... we like it heavy-duty.

and to quote the brainlizzard
if it aint nasty it aint psy-knock.

We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home.
