As far as psytrance goes, people in
Cleveland respond very well to
hard-dark progressive and techy.
We are trying our best to expose all
the different styles with emphasis on
live music. I'm really hoping we can
create a more diverse culture around here.
I think we have been having some success
in bringing diversity. They will get a
good taste of music at our next event.
We'll see how they feel after Mubali and
Onnomon get done with them!
Progressive is very big here. Not
necessarily my favorite, but just speaking
for the area.

Perhaps they'll pelt us with smart food, then burn and eat us, after first bludgening us, ok I can only speak for myself. A very special mindbending set for you, yes, you, Luke Malachi. Adjust your headbands.

About styles, and their patrons:

It's very difficult to speak for whole regions (legions) of people. I'll take a leap and speak for some of us older afficianos like a variety of psytrance. For a party, would prefer multiple energy levels throughout the course of the night/festival. There are a number of promoters though who will go for all the flash, all the time...GMS and friends (GMS is great)...ALL NIGHT. There are those of us who prefer starting things out with drum circles, live bands, moving the energy up, getting techy, getting dark, getting full-on, going funky, going to a dancable chill. And i'm sure that long-standing trancers everywhere would prefer this format.

I think style is probably more dependent on age group rather than city. I think any city in world has equal (unequal in the US) to the music thanks to the WWW.

Philadelphians like house, tech-house, DnB, and techno. We psytrancers like Yahel, ALL-THE-TIME, 24-7.

These days Boston is known as being more of a progressive psy city, and I suppose this is true in that the majority of psytrance *djs* in boston do play progressive psy. This is perhaps also due to the fact that by the time the music gets built up from progressive to full on, its 2am and the party is over.

While we did have a semi monthly party here called Central Psy that focused more on progressive music...Psyforia and Anitya (when it was around) are more of an equal balance between the proggy and the full on. And don't be fooled by the size of the city...we've seen our share of international psy acts both full on (Mr. Peculiar, Absolum, Nomad, Oforia, Talamasca, Dimitri, Paul Taylor) and progressive (Noma, Son Kite, S-Range, Peter Digital, Oryx) over the years.

The full on dark psy lovers do exist in Boston, I think they just tend to hide out a bit more than the proggy folk...and perhaps head elsewhere for a good party

In general tho, I would like to think there is equal love for the proggy and the full on here           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

I LIKE TRANCE. My ideal party has mostly tech prog and DARKKKKKKKK heavy smashing twisted. and then minimal if we have time in the afternoon i wish more organizers will embrace several styles and a progression throughout the night. there is good music in each style in my mind. open it and enjoy all of them. (but keep it dark hehe)           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

Here in FL we try to promote all styles. In every party there is a wide spectrum of sounds. From tech progressive, full on (isralien/french style), dark trance, morning progressive, psy techno. We believe in an organic experience and ppl here has not startted to segregate. I would think the toughest style to play to get the crowd crazy is dark trance danish style... but if played in the right moment the crowd just loves it

Well, I'm from new orleans and we don't have a style at all.

WHY?

Because new orleans is almost a dominat hip-hop rock town.

I was exposed to psy while staying in miami.

You all should count your blessings(i.e, cheese not being tolerated in S.F. (Mannnnn, if only you people knew what cheese is)). We have nothing.

Not if you're in a dark forest on a mushroom moon.. them gnomes and goblins start slam-dancing as soon as throw on Jahbo or Derango or Steptime or some other scando forest music.

plus, there's always some guys who REALLY REALLY like the hard tweaky insane stuff. hehe.

          ..it's just another party..

The active Portland crew has gone pretty much 100% dark/trauma/industrial...from start to finish at parties. Most new partygoers aren't aware that there are other styles of psytrance...

Once in a sweet while... There's a progressive/full on/goa set or act arranged by some old-skool refugees...
----------------
for my taste... the best psyscene (for the music) in the USA is Los Angeles. Choice international lineups...some dark acts at night with a emphasis on melodic/morning for the headliners... blooming all the time down there!

Yeah, I think focusing too much on one style can be detrimental to the scene. I really believe there's the right time and place for every style, if they're played well.

I really dislike hard dark psy in the morning. Gimme funky stylee, Goa, or intelligent full-on when the sun is up. But when it's dark and spooky out, there's nothing better than some Derango, GOW, or Kindzadza. And for warm-up sets, progressive is the bomb.

2 cents           ..it's just another party..

sounds like you need a dose of Goa Gil to fix that!

another point of clarification, in SF yeah there's some parties heavier than others,

but even then, there's just some good acts who everybody respects. at a party like digital talk a couple weekends ago, people weren't exactly splitting hairs over what kind of party it was.

and at the party the weekend before, there were some old-school trance snobs still up guiltily checking out astrix in the main room. i heard "yeah, i know it
s really cheesy, but..." a lot.           sound is vibration

don't blame them. you know, even the best music gets old really quickly when it's the only thing you get to hear.

....or if you got Dimitry djing...then the gnomes and goblins tend to start slam dancing as well, no matter where you are...this guy can sure down a killer funky groovy dark full on morning set           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

i like goa and/or psychedelic trance.
its trippy. you might have heard of it...

seriously. speed garage was forgotten in two seconds and wasn't worth remembering. splitting the scene over crappy music isn't worth it.

make it sound big, phat, and don't hold back because you think people won't "get" it. this is psychedelic trance people- we can handle some degree of mental challenge- its not pop...

bring back intelligence!

oh and...

progression of energy throughout the night and day=good.

and one other thing. I like melodies and really respect the old school for those really deep melodies-
i really have got to say that "People can fly" has a great melody. the recent melodic stuff seems really
1)not psychedelic
2)like happy hardcore slowed down.
its a very sad state of affairs where melody lovers are offered crappy cheese and learn to like it...

so i propose a deal-
i'll trade you a crappy thin kick drum and a weird hollow bassline for your cheesy happy-hardcore riff/melody... in other words- if i promise to spread the word to the trauma trancers about "no more crappy kick/bass" then will you tell astrix etc to drop the cheesy riffs/melodies and do something with some class?

seriously, if i walk into a room that claims to have psychedelic trance music and I hear two note riffs blasted like they are good and if i see everyone going crazy then i just wonder what went wrong...

i like spiritual music- deep music. it can be any style but it needs to be good. and variety is good too...
and timing. and flow. etc...

also-i think those little mackie srm 450's SUCK ASS and really have ruined many an experience for me musically. put a fucking sock in that tweeter/horn thing...puhleaze
