Title : Babette's Feast

Original Title : Babettes Gaestebud

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092603/

Director : Gabriel Axel

Year : 1987

Country : Denmark

I am a film lover since i can remember myself, something like 22 years already, sometimes i think i was a film lover even when i was in my mothers belly, she says she felt me very calm while she was watching movies while i was kicking and making noises during the rest of the day, probably i was calm because i wanted to enjoy the film, even today when i am watching a movie i need total silence around me and very very rarely i see movies with other people (apart porn ofcourse lol).

I remember myself watching movies all day long, spending weekends watching tv series on dvd for 20 hours in a row for two days in a row, watching my favorite movies on a certain date once in a year,i remember sleeping while watching some movies, getting terrified and frightened, bored, feeling puzzled, crying, laughing and many more feelings BUT i never ever remember any film that i felt peace inside me both in my soul and my mind like i did when i watched Babette's Feast for the very first time.

I felt so peacefull that morning that after the film was over i watched it again for the second time in row, something i have never ever done with any other film and i seriously doubt i will ever do again for any other film.

Babette's Feast is not an ordinary movie, its more like a ritual and thats how you must experience it.

The story seems simple and maybe a little bit old fashioned, two old ladies live in a small fish village somewhere in Scandinavia, raised by their father who was a pastor in a strict religious environment none of them got married although they were both very beautiful in their young years and although the propositions were many for both of them.

Life is a quiet, predictable and rather boring routine for them until one day a mysterious woman appears in their door during a storm,a woman from a foreign and distant land that doesnt speak their language neither seems to understand their way of life.

They keep this woman with them trying to help her and in exchange she cooks for them and helps them with the household issues.

Slowly they become friends but the mystery still surrounds the foreign woman although the rest of the village seems to like her quiet a lot.

One day a letter arrives for the mysterious woman, she seems very happy and she wants to share her joy with the old ladies and the rest of the village so she invites everyone to a special dinner.

The preparations take some time until the exotic ingredients arrive from various corners of the world, everyone is very excited and curious about what is going to happen.

The dinner day arrives and then magic appears on your screen.

Secrets revealed, long lost loves getting warm again, prejudices stepping aside, fears for the unknown dissapear, senses taking over the mind of people through the process of drinking and eating.

Babbette's Feast is one of the greatest films of European cinema,so simple and so magical at the same time, nothing fancy about the story or the scenes but somehow the film shines throughout its duration,a very special film for very special people and very special occasions.

This one is a hidden treasure,a real cult classic.

P.S Either arrange a dinner after the end of the movie or make sure you are full of food before watching this film,do not make the mistake and see this movie on an empty stomach or without plans to fill your belly.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

ok so Carnivale is finished.....entertaining stuff!
last episode was a real blast.....detox: who do you think survived at the end?!
i thought evil is the winner....the omega saves the devil...and takes the life of ben?! need a second analyses to understand better...
it definetely needed a sequel...!

despite this i thought it was really well produced...lots of good stories inside the main themes...definetely very expensive.....but it had even more potential: the rhythm is a little too slow in some parts and more intriguing stuff about matthew's books could be revealed....anyways thanks for the suggestion...I enjoyed it a lot...!

Excuse me Detox, but I'd like to add one underground movie, and also a suggestion for those who like French movies.

Title: Le Silence de Lorna

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1186369/

Directors: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne

Year: 2008

Country: Belgium | France | Italy | Germany

Lorna is a woman involved on some VISA scams.
She had married a heroin junkie just in order to get her visa.
When she finally gets her Belgium ID, her crew starts to plan her husband's "suicide", so that Lorna can do the same thing for a Russian guy who wants to live as a Belgium citizen.

Suddenly, story gets a bit complicated, when Lorna starts to have conflicts between her financial side and her human side.

Very interesting story. It's the 100% drama picture. Really enjoyed it.

Btw, Dardenne bros are the writters from "Le Couperet", which was suggested by Detox a couple of pages ago.

i want to add one too
one of my favorites

Title: Harakiri (or Seppuku)

Director: Masaki Kobayashi

Year:1962
Country: Japan

(copy form IMDb)

Peace in 17th-century Japan causes the Shogunate's breakup of warrior clans, throwing thousands of samurai out of work and into poverty. An honorable end to such fate under the samurai code is ritual suicide, or hara-kiri (self-inflicted disembowelment). An elder warrior, Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) seeks admittance to the house of a feudal lord to commit the act. There, he learns of the fate of his son-in-law, a young samurai who sought work at the house but was instead barbarically forced to commit traditional hara-kiri in an excruciating manner with a dull bamboo blade. In flashbacks the samurai tells the tragic story of his son-in-law, and how he was forced to sell his real sword to support his sick wife and child. Tsugumo thus sets in motion a tense showdown of revenge against the house...

...
You just stuck on the chair with no breath till that masterpiece ends.. Absolutely brutal and serious.. Recommended if you are a fan of Samurai films.

Very nice movies here, bravo people

I wanted to recommend Harakiri, but Gutter was faster.
Anyway, awesome movie.

I'll suggest this instead:

Elevator to the gallows
(Ascenseur pour l'échafaud)

by the legendary French director Louis Malle
Music by MILES DAVIS
(and the soundtrack from this movie is my favourite album from Miles Davis, incredible).

It's a thriller from 1958, I won't talk much about the story, 'cos I'll spoil the movie for you.
I'll just say that there's no special fx, no boobs, no car chasing.

Just the amazing story, amazing camera, amazing music, amazing acting and amazing atmosphere.

Highly recommended for any true film lover.

Director: Ang Lee

Year: 1994

Plot: A senior chef lives with his three grown daughters; the middle one finds her future plans affected by unexpected events and the life changes of the other household members.

Hey, just wanted to say that their are some awesome movies in this thread, also I'd like to recommend one, dont know if it's as underground as the others, but I love this movie and think you guys will too.

Touch Of Evil (1958)- Orson Welles

Straight-arrow narcotics detective Mike Vargas (Charlton Heston) sees his honeymoon cut short when a car crossing the U.S.-Mexico border explodes before his eyes. Vargas forsakes his bride (Janet Leigh) to mount an investigation but soon locks horns with corpulent Sheriff Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles), a shady cop who's not above planting evidence or colluding with the local crime lord to keep Vargas from discovering the ugly truth.

(^^^sorry just cut and pasted from Netflix lol)

But seriously this is a great movie, has to be the best movie Orson Welles ever made.

Well, I really like your recommendations usually. But here, I had a totally different experience.

For me this movie was very shallow and simplifying. All the Afghans that are pro-taliban are child molesters, all the ones that are not are good and smart and sensitive. The characthers are without depth, and everything is so expected.

Didn't like it at all. I think it's a bad movie.

I think maybe you fell into a hollywood trap here, Detox ;-)

A much better movie that has to do with Afghanistan a little, but more with the way the west treats it and other places like it, and the people who come from there is here:

Highly recommended!           ---------------------------------------------

In the beggining i was very cautious of watching an american film dealing with Afghanistan, yes some propaganda scenes are present but this is a majestic story greatly directed and The Kite Runner is easily one of the best films from last year.

So i guess no Hollywood trap for me there, after all the hole would have to be huge in order to fit me in LOL           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title : La Graine Et Le Mulet

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487419/

Director : Abdel Kechiche

Year : 2007

Country : France

Mr.Slimani is an aging divorced father who is working in a shipyard. Isolated and with a lot of personal and financial problems he tries to keep in touch with his family, maintain his job, balance his erotic relationship and realize his own dream of building a restaurant on a boat.

Somehow though everything around him makes him feel useless and of no importance, his ex wife complains about the money he contributes to his family, his kids want to get rid of him and sent him back to his country of origin, his employer wants to fire him and the bureaucracy is putting a lot of obstacles against his dream restaurant.

Slimani seems to be all alone except the friendship of his mistress daughter the young and beautiful Rym who tries to help him with his boat restaurant.

This is the personal story of a man who tries to balance his life no matter how much pressured he is, a man who chases his dream and tries to help others around him despite all the obstacles that he faces. This is the story of the straw that broke the camels back...

La Graine Et Le Mulet is an excellent film dealing with personal relationships and feelings, a great study of our modern society where most people struggle to protect their life from breaking into pieces.

The story is a little bit slow paced for the amateur cinefile but the direction is great and the ending is just amazing, thumbs up for the arabian soundtrack and keep an eye on the absolutely stunning Hafsia Herzi on the role of Rym who gives a great perfomance and a majestic belly dance in the end of the film.

Highly suggested to the true world cinema lovers.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

The Other Side Of The Midnight

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076507/

I'm not gonna say anything about this one.
So you'll just have to trust on me.

Donn't miss it. I just don't think it will be easy to find.
