if you like deutsch cinema then i would suggest you to check out "the edukators" (english title)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408777/

some words about it:
The movie is essentially about three friends with seemingly no particular direction in life other than petty political activism now and then. But Peter and Jan have found a very clever way of subverting the socio-economic system they so despise. Calling themselves "the Edukators", they break into the homes of the fabulously wealthy only to make some absurd adjustments to the arrangement of their furniture and leave a simple note behind: "You have too much money."

With this basic plot, The Edukators delves into that ill-defined human notion of morality, eventually blurring the line between the ethics of social politics and the ethics of personal relationships.

hope you enjoy!

Amazing film, very touching

Dunno if you know Todd Solondz's work or not...but I'm a huge fan, his movies are somewhat disturbing, but impossible, for me at least, to stop watching them a second.

For example:

Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114906/ :

Hilarious black, very black, comedy which launched the career of Heather Matarazzo, whom later became a mainstream figure.

Low budget, independently produced, garnered critical praise for its nail biting view of a pre-teen outcast, and won the Grand Jury Prize for best dramatic feature at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival.

I rathe this movie very, very highly., I can't stop laughing when I watch it, but many friends of mine have found it very cruel.

There is a kind of a sequel...sort of, this movie is called Palindromes (2004) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362004/

Which is pure genious, but way more disturbing, if that's possible, than Welcome to the Dollhouse, although it was nominated for a Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, it raised the eyebrows of many pundits and reviewers due to its themes of child molestation, statutory rape and abortion...I know, I know.

Of course it's an independent production, and like all of Solondz's previous films, Palindromes is set in suburban New Jersey and it was released unrated in the US.

Absolutely great movie...a bit of a headfuck one...but worth watching.

Then...well, all of Todd's movies are amazing:

Happiness
Storytelling
Schatt's Last Shot
Fear, Anxiety & Depression

Not exactly uplifting maybe...but give a sh*t, this is art.

Title : Come And See

Original Title : Idi I Smotri

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

Director : Elem Klimov

Year : 1985

Country : Russia

Come And See is a war film that everyone should have seen but due to distribution issues very very few people outside Russia have watched.

The plot is simple, during World War II in Belarus a boy joins the resistance against the German forces. The partisans are almost unarmed and very weak against the german war machine that kills everything in its way therefore the young boy becomes a witness and survivor of various horrifying situations that will force him to grow up faster and loose his innocence while at the same time will affect his mental state.

Where Come And See really stands out is not the plot but the way which things are shown on the big screen. The film is so graphic, brutal, surreal and powerful that makes Schindler's List and The Pianist look like comedies. I gave the dvd to a lot of people and half of them couldnt stand finishing it and those who managed to finish it had to do it with no women present in the room so if you want to watch this along with your girlfriend just forget about it.

If violence and blood doesnt turn your stomach upside down, if getting depressed wont make you commit suicide and if you are interested into World War atrocities then Come And See will become an instant favorite for you.

This is Russian cinema at its best.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title : The Legend Of 1900

Original Title : La Leggenda Del Pianista Sull'Oceano

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120731/

Director : Giuseppe Tornatore

Year : 1998

Country : Italy

I can still remember the very first time i watched The Legend Of 1900 back in Xmass 1998 on my way from Athens to New York. I actually watched it two times in a row and the funny thing is that although its one of my favorite films of all times i havent watched it ever since. Silly me indeed.

Like i have said in the past i am both a Giuseppe Tornatore and Tim Roth fan plus i love films that are like bedtime stories and where there is a constant narration during the movie, films like Big Fish, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and The Shawshank Redemption. The Legend Of 1900 is one of them.

The movie tells the story of 1900, a baby that was abandonded in a ship and grew within the ship while acquiring a peculiar taste in music and developing his piano skills.

1900 never stepped outside of the ship although he was presented with many opportunities during his life. He adjusts to modern music trends by asking the passengers of the ship what is being played in the real world and he is such a good musician that his fame reaches the ears of many famous musicians of the time, one of which joins the ship to duel 1900 on a piano contest.

The years pass by and a time comes when the ship has to stop working and has to be demolished. Then 1900 is facing the dilema of his life since he has to abandon the ship and join the real world.

The Legend Of 1900 is a very underated film with a great soundtrack, majestic cinematography, impressive costume design and many great actors such as Tim Roth, Bill Nunn, Pruit Taylor Vince and Clarence Williams III.

If you havent seen it then you dont know what you are missing and i also better go and rent the dvd again after 12 years.

Title : M

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0022100/

Director : Fritz Lang

Year : 1931

Country : Germany

No matter what someone says about Lang's masterpiece it wont be enough to do justice to M.

Somewhere in 1930's Berlin a psychotic killer murders young children and the citizens are afraid to allow their kids out in the streets.

The police despite launching a manhunt to arrest the killer and using all the new techniques of the time like fingerprinting and handwriting analysis end up with no results except upseting the underworld of the city that cant commit any crimes due to the high police activity everywhere.

The criminals are desperate with this situation and in a secret meeting decide to catch the killer themselves so that the police will stop being on a constant alert mode and that they will be able to continue their operations in the future. For this reason they ask help from the city beggars in order to assist them in finding the identity of the serial killer.

So now both the police and the underworld are trying to catch this mysterious and dangerous man.

M is the ancestor of Seven and Silence Of The Lambs, a cult classic film with Peter Lorre giving the perfomance of his life as the serial killer. He manages to be so dangerous, innocent, funny and frightening at the same time, a majestic perfomance by any means.

The story was decades ahead of its time and the end is really suspenseful and thought provocing. When we are talking about innovative cinema then this is exactly what we are talking about.

M is trully a real gem of world cinema and i wish that one day there will be a remake giving justice to the original classic.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title: Blow Up

The first British flic from the master himself, Michelangelo Antonioni, is a suspense psychological thriller/drama.

It is about a successful mod photographer in London whose world is bounded by fashion, pop music, marijuana, and easy sex, who feels his life is boring and despairing.

One day he took some photos in the park, and when he started do develop them - he thought he saw something. So he starts to "blow up" (zoom in) the photo, to see what's actually on it, and becomes obsessed with it.

I'm so with you here. My favourite of his must be Happiness. Deeply gripping it is, yet incredibly funny. The most awesome thing to it, though, is that, in spite of all the darkness, in the endthe movie just leaves you with a smile on your face and a feeling of positivity.

Highly recommended!!           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

Title : The Swimmer

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063663/

Director : Frank Perry

Year : 1968

Country : USA

Based on a short story by John Cheever (one of the best short story writers of all times) The Swimmer is one of the most underated and rare films in the history of film making.

Burt Lancaster is Ned Merrill a fine looking and very fit man, although already around 55 years old, who enters the backyard pool of a friendly couple.

They have a chat and a drink and he decides to swim his way back home by visiting various houses and swimming in every pool that he will encounter. A tribute to his wife as he mentions since he will name this pool route as the Lucinda River which is the name of his wife.

Ned is visiting various houses and pools and meets with various characters from his past, it is obvious from the beggining that most of the characters havent seen Ned for a long time and also Ned seems to remember most of them being much younger than they are now.

He meets with friendly and not so friendly faces and recites old stories with them although he avoids talking about his past and he seems puzzled when someone mentions his wife and two daughters.

He meets with old friends, old enemies, lovers, some new young people and even his old baby sitter (the stunning Janet Landgard who is amazing in her role but for some reason never continued what seemed like a bright career).

During the whole film every character mentions something about Ned's past life, his family, his job, his home and his way of living.

Little by little Ned is getting cold and tired while we understand that something has gone terrible wrong and by the end of the film the drama reaches its climax.

The Swimmer is a hidden treasure of American cinema and one of the best stories describing the pursuit of the American Dream and how people treat you when you are rich and famous and how they treat you when things have gone wrong.

A real masterpiece highly suggested to cinema lovers.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

R.I.P. Dennis Hopper

Title : Easy Rider

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064276/

Director : Dennis Hopper

Year : 1969

Country : USA

Two young "hippie" bikers, Wyatt and Billy sell some dope in Southern California, stash their money away in their gas-tank and set off for a trip across America, on their own personal odyssey looking for a way to lead their lives. On the journey they encounter bigotry and hatred from small-town communities who despise and fear their non-conformism.

It was hard to decide which Dennis Hopper's movie to post here, since he was truly a legend and acted in so many great movies. He was with James Dean in Rebel without a cause and Giant, Apocalypse Now, Osterman Weekend and Blue Velvet, just to mention a few.

Anyway, hope you're in some better place now, Dennis - and thanks for everything you did for us, the movie fanatics.           http://www.myspace.com/shumamusic
