Title : Pixote

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082912/

Director : Hector Babenco

Year : 1981

Country : Brazil

This is one of the most underated and underground movies in the history of world cinema probably because it was very hardcore and provocative for its time and showed the unknown face of a country like Brazil to the rest of the world therefore the extremely limited distribution especially in USA.

Its been something like 20 years ago but i still remember the very first time i came accross this movie when i was something like 7-8 years old and i was searching my local video club's tapes for some cheap horror films which i was watching late at night when my parents were sleeping (the club owner didnt allow me to rent porn back then LOL).

So while i was browsing some Freddy Kruger,Werewolf,Halloween and Jason from Friday The 13th tapes i came accross a black cover that had painted on it a heroin syringe,a gun and the face of a young boy with a woolen cap that had the scariest look i had ever seen in my life.I got so scared with it that for the next 3-4 months i had nightmares whenever i thought of it,nevertheless through whenever i went to my local video club i always searched for it looked the cover for some seconds and put it immediately right back. That painted cover was very very scary and prevented me from renting this movie. Was searching google to find this painted cover but i wasnt lucky at all so far.

After some time i started forgetting about it and 3-4 years passed before i came accross it again and decided to rent it.

What i saw shocked my back then innocent world,i discovered how heroin was used, what a transexual is,what a street gang was,how prisons looked like, that police is not always good and many many other things.

This film makes Cidade De Deus (City Of God) look like a Friends episode and to be honest i dont understand why people like Cidade De Deus at all,i found it a very boring film and very unrealistic.

Pixote is 100% hardcore reality from the streets of Brazil, its so fucking real that the young boy (just ten years old at that time) was a real gang member that returned to the streets after the end of the filming and got killed just some years later during a police raid. The majority of the cast actually are just playing the roles they had in real life.

This is one of the gems in my personal movie collection and i hope you can find it and watch it,really worths all the time searching for it.

Title : Apt Pupil

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118636/

Director : Bryan Singer

Year : 1998

Country : Usa

Based on a Stephen King's short story this amazing psychological thriller describes the relationship between a young student and his older neighbour whom the student suspects to be a former Nazi officer hiding from the authorities.

The direction by Bryan Singer is great and the main character is very well acted by Brad Renfro but it is the majestic perfomance by the one and only Ian McKellen that makes this movie a small gem.I really cant imagine anyone else apart McKellen performing the role of Kurt Dussander and i seriously dont know why he wasnt nominated for an Oscar for this exquisite perfomance.

The plot is very interesting and with many twists as the main characters blackmail and threat each other plus the movie gets really frightening on some points although horror actions are mostly implied rather showed on screen like the scene where Renfro's character is killing a pigeon that cant fly with his basketball.

Whats more interesting though are the profiles and the characters of the main figures of the film and how some persons turn from good into bad and how old memories from the distant past can sometimes trigger unpredictable events.

Like Dussander's character states in the beggining of the film some doors should remain closed and never open again.

I add that when you stare into the abyss then the abyss also stares into you.

Highly recommended and although this is not a classic it is a very good and unique film that will keep you on your heels throughout its two hours.Trust me i have seen it more than 5 times and i tell you satisfaction is guaranteed.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title : Vertigo

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052357/

Director : Alfred Hitchcock

Year : 1958

Country : Usa

Last March i ordered a special Hitchcock boxset from Amazon.co.uk that included 12 of the masters works all audiovisually restored. These have to be the wisest money i have ever spent on the internet.

Vertigo was produced in 1958 but until 1984 it was one of the five Hitchcock lost masterpieces that were left as part of his legacy to his daughter and noone had watched it for almost 30 years.

Set in San Francisco the story starts simple, the main protagonist John Ferguson (played by the great James Stewart) is a detective afraid of heights who after an accident while chasing a criminal on a roof top and the death of a police officer decides to retire and spend his time at home.

While still recovering from his accident he receives a phone call from a college friend who he hadnt seen for years and who asks him, despite the fact that he insists that he has retired,to keep an eye on his young and beautiful woman (stunning Kim Novak) who lately started acting in a very strange way plus missing lot of hours away from home.

Ferguson accepts the job and slowly but steadily he gets obsessed with his friends wife despite her strange behaviour and the mystery behind her actions.

What follows is the work of a genious that develops into a majestic psychological thriller with great emphasis on the main characters personalities and problems, lots of story twists and with a gripping ending that will leave you with your mouth open.

The acting is great, the soundtrack is great, the restoration is great, the locations and cinematography is great, the story and the twists are great and even the damn poster of this film is fucking amazing.

Vertigo is constantly included on the first ten positions of various internet/magazine polls about the best movies of all times but somehow very few people have actually watched this film,in reality more people know the film poster than the film itself and thats why i include Vertigo in my underground movie suggestions list because it is trully an underground and i dare to say cult film.

Dont get tricked by its age,50 years old but indeed a timeless classic,do yourself a favour and see the restored version.          Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title : Nuovo Cinema Paradiso

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095765/

Director : Giuseppe Tornatore

Year : 1988

Country : Italy

Giuseppe Tornatore has to be one of the most underated directors around the world if you consider that almost everybody has seen and much enjoyed at least one of his films but out of 100 people only 1 or 2 people might really know him.He is seriously underground (even though he has won and been nominated for countless awards both in USA and Europe) and he deserves a place in this topic.

Malena was sexy and reminded me of my early childhood,Everybody's Fine is a wonderful film with the power presence of the one and only Marcello Mastroianni,A Pure Formality with Polanski and Depardieu is a majestic mystery thriller,Il Camorrista is an Italian classic crime flick,La Sconosciuta is an intriguing drama showing many aspects of refuggees life in modern Italy but its Nuovo Cinema Paradiso and The Legend Of 1900 that are my favorites (and probably his most well known) films from this great director.

Although The Legend Of 1900 is one of my all time favorite films with a majestic perfomance by Tim Roth and a great cast and a unique story i feel that Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is Tornatore's great cinema masterpiece and one of the most wonderful films ever produced,a film full of sentiments and deeper meanings that will bring back memories to everyone watching it.

A famous Sicilian film director living in Rome receives news from his mother that a good friend of his has just passed away. After many years of absense he decides to return to his home village to pay his respect to his good old friend Alfredo.

When arriving in the village he notices how things are different from what they used to be,people have changed, buildings have changed and very few things remind him of his happy childhood.

The film moves decades back when the director was just a kid living with his mother while his dad was missing in the war.He remembers when the cinema came to his town and how everybody was going there every night to have some good time and fun and forget about the difficulties of life and the poverty in Sicily at that time.

He was sneaking with his friends for free in the cinema but soon he wasnt allowed to enjoy his favorite films so he became a friend with the person who run the projection machine (Alfredo) and a great friendship slowly but steadily develops between them.

The years pass and many things happen in the village, both good and bad,the boy falls in love, the village fool teases everyone offering a great laugh,an accident takes place at the cinema, someone becomes very rich in the village and in general many funny and sad things take place in the main characters life until one day he has become too old to stay there and he decides to move to Rome and follow his love for cinema.

The characters and the story are amazing and will make you laugh and cry at the same time, laugh by looking into the past and cry when realizing how the future has developed and how things have changed in our times and how the old values are now lost.

Direction is great, acting just fantastic, soundtrack is an all time classic, cinematography is amazing so no wonder this masterpiece won many contests like Oscar and Golden Globe awards in Usa,Bafta in UK,Cannes and Cesar prizes in France and more.

If i had to use just three words to describe this movie then i guess i would just copy paste its title because this really is Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.

Highly recommended to everyone that wants to experience what true cinema is about and how movies should be made.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Title : Carnivale

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319969/

Director : Daniel Knauf

Year : 2003-2005 TV Series

Country : USA

I know that the title of this topic is Underground Movies Suggestions but i decided to bend the rules a little bit tonight,i believe it really worths it.

Carnivale is not a movie but a short lived (just 24 episodes) tv series which although gained huge popularity within the United States is totally unknown to the rest of the world for some strange reason at least to me.When it was stopped (due to its extremely high production costs per episode) HBO received (and even today still receives) thousands of emails from fans asking for the series to continue something that even today is still a possibility and from time to time talks leak on the internet that the HBO management is considering restarting the series with bright new episodes.

Carnivale is the usual story of the eternal fight between the forces of good and evil on earth.

Thats actually the one and only usual fact with this magnificent tv series.

Set in USA around 1934,the time of great depression,Carnivale is the story of Ben Hawkins a young boy with no familly,no home,no money,no nothing, who is joining a travelling circus in an effort to try to survive on these difficult times.

The circus is full of strange and mysterious characters, the midget carnival director named ironically Samson,a tarot card reader and her catatonic mother that also has telekinetic abilities,a bearded lady that lives with her blind mentalist lover,a siamese twins and many more.Among them there is the mysterious owner of the carnivale that noone except Samson has ever seen, they all refer to him/her/it simply as The Management.

Ben,the main character, discovers that he also has some special powers and he can heal the injured and raise the dead, everything ofcourse comes at a great price which i wont ofcourse mention here.

Thousands of miles away another character,a preacher named Brother Justin Crowe is having some visions and believes that God has a special plan for him so he starts a quest to help the poor and the unfortunate.

Ben and Brother Justin are both trying to help the people around them and act good and in Gods will but as time passes things get very very confusing and great conflicts arise that makes the main characters (and the viewers ofcourse) wonder if their actions are trully good or evil and what purpose each one of them really serves.

What is good for one man is bad for another and vice versa and the main characters face some great questions and dillemas throughout the story which includes many and crazy twists.

Mystery,Horror,Crime,Magic,Fantasy,Romance,Thriller,Drama,Comedy,Action everything wrapped up in a great package in a short but amazing series that will not let you leave your seat unless you finish with it within a weekend, yes i am serious you will tottally get hooked with it in dangerous levels.

The end will leave you with couple of questions but for me this series stands among the best the American Industry has produced among Lost and Prison Break,on certain points actually i dare to say that Carnivale is even better than both of them like the mystic atmosphere surrounding both the scenes and the characters.

Highly recommented, those of you who havent heared about this one will come and thank me in the next days.

Title : Storm Of The Century

Website : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0135659/

Director : Craig Redding Baxley

Year : 1999

Country : USA

Storm Of The Century is another Stephen King novel adapted for the big screen, thankfully this time its very good unlike the majority of the great writer's cinema adaptations.

Little Tall Island in Maine is expecting its heaviest snow storm of the last 100 years so the people rush to the local super market to get supplies until the weather calms down.

While the local people are getting prepared for the snow storm a mysterious man appears out of nowhere in the island, his name is Andre Linoge and although noone has ever seen him before in the island or knows anything about him he seems to know everything about everyone on the island, and everything means even the darkest and best hidden secrets of every local. Also his walking cane seems to have some sort of dark magic power which is a great highlight of the film.

Linoge's presence is surrounded by great mystery and since his arrival in the island very strange things happen, people start fighting and accusing each other, fatal accidents happen and people commit suicides while Mr.Linoges keeps repeating all the time "Give me what i want and i will go away".

Who Linoges is and what he wants is not clear and it seems that he is trying to convince the local town people that he has the power to destroy them before he will reveal his true identity and wishes.

Storm Of The Century is a well kept secret that never gained much popularity either within or outside USA.I really dont understand why because this is a very well directed film and i enjoyed watching it a lot.

It is 4 hours long but dont get afraid from its duration because this is not a boring movie at all and the story is very interesting and quiet original. The ending is also great,i will just mention that it is very different from what you are used to.

Try to locate this one and make sure you watch it in one view preferably with some good company on a Saturday/Sunday night.

Highly recommented to the mystery/horror/fantasy fans and ofcourse all the Stephen King fans out there.
