What is psychedelic?

Please - no terms like "mind boggling" or "twisting" or something.

The word psychedelic is a neologism coined form the Greek words for "mind," psyche, and "manifest," delos.

A psychedelic experience is characterized by the perception of aspects of one's mind previously unknown, or by the creative exuberance of the mind liberated from it ordinary fetters. Psychedelic states are one of the stations on the spectrum of experiences elicited by psychedelic substances. On that same spectrum will be found hallucinations, distortions of perception, altered states of awareness, mystical states, and occasionally states resembling psychosis.

The term was first coined as a noun in 1956 by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond, as an alternative descriptor for hallucinogenic drugs in the context of psychedelic psychotherapy. The term featured in a now-famous exchange with Aldous Huxley, in which the ill-fated term phanerothyme was suggested.

Insomniac summed it up well. Further details :

The term "psychedelic" originated in correspondence during the early 1950s between two pioneers in the study of psychoactive drugs : Humphrey Osmond, a British psychiatrist who studied the effects of mescaline and LSD on alcoholics in Canada, and Aldous Huxley, the English author of Brave New World (1932) and The Doors of Perception (1954). These men needed a word to describe the effects of the drugs they themselves were taking, and Osmond suggested in 1957 "psychedelic" from the Greek words psyche (soul or mind) and delein (to make manifest) or deloun (to show or reveal). He illustrated its use in a rhyme: "To fathom hell or soar angelic, just take a pinch of psychedelic."
This term emphasizes the aspect of the drug experience that involves an increased awareness of one's surroundings and also of one's own bodily processes - in brief, an expansion of consciousness.

From the beginning, scientists studying the effects of psychedelic drugs remarked on the way they enhanced the experience of listening to music, sometimes causing "synesthesia," or the illusion of seeing sounds as colors. Albert Hoffmann, the Swiss chemist who first synthesized LSD, noted that under its influence, "every sound generated a vividly changing image with its own consistent form and color."

The psychedelic music initiated by bands like Pink Floyd in the 60s was largely inspired by hallucinogens, and attempted to recreate drug-induced states through the use of overdriven guitar, amplified feedback, and droning guitar motifs influenced by Eastern music. The aim of Psy Trance is not different, replacing rock sounds by techno sounds.

I mean what is it in the trance context.

I see all the time that the music of today is not psychedelic anymore, like it used to be.
What made it psychedelic then, and what is it now? Just trying to understand it...

I'm getting your point Mike, IMO opinion music is less psychedelic now a days because artists are not using the sounds and melodies they used back in the goa days.

Now the vibe is the E chewing kids who only like violent music..

Psychedelic means mind expanding, so why not use these words? If you don't know what they mean, I guess you just have to drop some acid and expand your mind.

Rightly said.

I think because E forces u to have a good time no matter where u are or what ur doing- as such its cheapened the entire trance dance experience.

This is only my opinion, so before the E advocates jump on my back for the above statement, let me reiterate.... its just my opinion.

Just yesterday i had posted a topic here entitled:

'Without AliceD would there be any PSYtrance???'

but the post was deleted, and rightly so- because it was drug related.

MY answer to my own question (the one i believe right now) is- i don't think so.

Psychedelic life and indeed psychedelic music are (as i see it) inspired directly by hofy's brainchild.
That particle gave us access to thoughts and instincts that were stored away in our collective memory.... as such, it gave us A key.

E is NOT a key... perhaps for the mentally unstable it can be used to elevate them from their depleted state (frequent/superfluous use may actually leave u in this state)... but after the initial euphoria, there is nothing new to learn. (cept what a baaaad comedown feels like perhaps )

Please, my request is that u all read this (if u haven't already):

I really like this sentence traveller.

Psychedelic music is altering your mind and you are expressing this in the dance with your body.

And imo it's true, that lot's of the music nowadays only works on the body. It keeps you going, but nothing is happening in the head.

It is very difficult to say what exactly it is in the music, that does alter the mind.
To me it certainly doesn't mean just lot's of weird sounds, that's noise.
The sounds have to trigger associations and create the feeling that you are experiencing something more than just sounds. The music becomes a space to explore. You are not dancing to the music, but in the music.

If we take a further step back, Goa added spirit/soul/heart to the body & mind combination

And they call this progress!

As for "psychedelic"... to me it is just a sound that has a profound effect - which is going to be different for everyone. Some people find minimal really psychedelic, while I don't always feel the same... psychedelic for me is finely produced, lots of depth, complexity, and sound character, relying on subconscious and sublime influence... you can lose yourself in a single layer, hypnotized, then return your attention to any other part of the audio gestalt and key into the pattern expressed, paint your own images in your mind as you follow the dynamic noise matrices... listen to Psychopod - Stop the Carnage, now THAT is psychedelic!

I might be totally off about this but this is what I think. The most psychedlic years for me was the early 90s. Compare to then, recent music is not psychedelic for me. I think the d's were way stronger and better back in the days. IE California Sunshine and Doves. Music composers getting influenced by potent psychedelic experiences directly reflect the music thats been composed in that ERA. Hearing these psychedelic tracks sober still did a job, I beleive music is a reflection of that ERA. This is my personal opinion.
Nowadays alot of music composers are composing music just on computers and formulas without any psychedelic experience/inspiration. Therefore is not psychedelic and sounds boring and empty. But yes on the other hand, there are few totally straight music composers producing psychedelic sounds. Some people are naturally psychedelic I guess.

the reason for why the psytrance scene is getting less psychedelic is farly easy.

Psytrance is getting more and more popular. And that means that more un-drugged people are making psytrance.. And lets be honest. Most of us need psychedelic drug experiences to understand what is psychedelic music or not. I dont mean to offend people. *peace*

btw. i would say that scandinavien psytrance is very psychedelic. And i'm sorry to say that Isreal is the country that produces most un-psychedelic psytrance. This is because psytrance is more mainstream in Isreal then lets say Sweden, Norway and Denmark..

Its like.. Infected Mushroom used to take psydrugs back in the days. But they kinda sstopped. So then we get less psytrance from the mushies..

But but but.. though i miss the older psytrance/goa style.. I must admit that i love many of the new acts as well. But we need more people like Simon Postford in the world. *Lets turn on*
