i know this sounds kinda dumb, but ive always wondered is it ok to request a song to a dj/artist thats playing?? cuz so many times ive wanted to go up and request a track that i havent heard him play yet but dont know if i should. my reasons for not asking are:

(1) the dj/artist already has a pre-planned playlist or set that he doesnt want to mess up
(2) the dj/artist might be offended that i dont appreciate his track selection
(3) its too loud and he wont be able to hear me (im not good at shouting)

and if #1 is true than should that person really be dj'ing?? i mean, i have no idea how spinning psy tracks works out but shouldnt you be able to incorporate any track into your set if you're a legitimately good artist?? i hope this doesnt offend anyone cuz that was not my purpose... just curiosity...           oO0~ be happy . be hippie ~0Oo

1: Most djs wont pre-plan their set - i think because you can not pre determine the feeling of the party when you are at home.
2: This depends i think... you might want to hear Britney Spears' nu single.
3: This option seems stupid. might not make good first impressions screaming in someones ear. A piece of paper would probably work better. haha.

Some dj's/artists do ahve pre planned sets... i mean what if their LIVE. You cant really ask the dude to play a track u fancy right ??

Some of them play a pre planned dj set that consists of their new unreleased or fav tracks.. so i dont see how that might help u either...

BUT!!

I do know of some dj's who just play whatever they feel like at that time, like BSM for instance These guys are usually great beatmatchers so it doesnt matter what they incorporate into their sets.. its more flexible.
If u get a dj like that than u get lucky..

And there also is the matter of taste.. I magine u really really wud like to hear Protoculture - Avalon but u have Highko playin a set on.. It just might be fairly impossible u goin to hear that track that nite.

something you have to understand - even for totally freeform sets, good DJs don't just throw on the latest killers in a random order - the flow of the set is an art form. If your track fits the mood, you might get lucky, but the DJ has to think not just about what YOU want to hear, but what the other 300 people want to hear also. so if you don't get to hear your fave track, don't take it personally.

btw, people who keep bugging the DJ to play their favorite tracks are fuckin annoying! especially when they're drunk and get all aggro, fall on the decks, or knock the needle off the record, etc.

hehe.. just venting.

          ..it's just another party..

I have played requests on quite a few occasions, if the party had been rocking and everybody is having a great time people have just asked for certain tracks and if they fit in my set then why not its all fun at the end of the day, some djs can take it to seriously.
I did have the funniset request when i was playing in the shore bar new years eve 1997 or 1998 (i can't quite remember) and i guy asked me for Barbie Girl , i was shocked but i also couldn't stop laughing, very funny.

This makes me remember the "Trommelmachine" days (Der Dritte Raum).. In afterhourz sometimes it was the whole crowd screaming for that track ! Was funny hehe, and we could hear it several times in a few hours...

i much agree with this, imo a good dj will perform a "rollercoast" ride with his tracks, having killers and chillers in his sets. his (the dj's) personality, taste, and very much his effort is reflected in the track selection and ulimately on the mixing it all together. if the dj is known, or let's say he is the reason why people fill the event, i find it inappropriate to "disturb" him/her during his work.

(e.g. i wouldn't ask carl cox to spin some detroit during his house set, even though i'm sure he could )

i very much agree with this too. i usually grant a requested track if it fits in my set and doesn't "destroy" the flow and build-up of what has been played (and if it's a cute girl asking for it, ehehe.... j/k)

@faracid

"(1) the dj/artist already has a pre-planned playlist or set that he doesnt want to mess up"

I do always have my sets preplanned, but not so that I cant adapt the set if it isnt working well with the dancefloor. I spend a lot of time and effort planning the set, also, making sure the flow is just right for the crowd, venue, time of the night etc.
However, this does not matter when it comes to requests... What matters is that I am the DJ, people are listening to my taste in music, knowledge of flow etc... If I react to requests, its no longer me whos playing - and in all respects I have gone from serious trance DJ to an organic jukebox.

(2) the dj/artist might be offended that i dont appreciate his track selection

Sadly I do get offended, it breaks my concentration while playing and also its sometimes a bit of an insult feeling I get. Im my eyes, if you request tracks, you dont know what trance djing is all about, and how important it is for the dj to visualize and control the flow of tracks.
If you dont like the music, DONT DANCE... and also, if you want to choose tracks - learn to dj

(3) its too loud and he wont be able to hear me (im not good at shouting)

Yes its very loud, and quite annoying to have to stop what your doing and start talking with someone you cant hear, getting spit in your ears in the process hehe. Besides, it isnt funny to have to turn people down all the time either.

What you are really telling the dj when you request tracks is "hey, your music sucks, play my music instead" - which isnt really fun... The dj is only supposed to look at the dancers and the audience. Some organizers and promoters might also come up and try to dictate what the DJ should spin, which is just as bad, or even worse.

The DJ has a responsibility towards himself and his name, also, he has a responsibility to those among the audience who came to listen to a certain style of music (like psychedelic trance).

Recently I djed a place where I got requests for stuff like scooter, dj aligator and skazi. That was pretty fucked up, since none of those styles where even remotely announced on the flyer. It would not be fair to those who actually came to experience ME spin music in those genres, to just react, also, it wouldnt be fair to myself to do so.

If a DJ doesnt cut it, dont book him. Respect trance djing for what it is, dont do requests, leave the dj to do his job - if your not happy, dont dance, THAT the dj WILL see If its only you who stop, well, then YOU are at the wrong party

Faracid, btw, NICE TOPIC For lots of DJ´s this is really a problem. Also, I actually once or twice requested tracks when I was like 15 years old.... Then I learned to dj

Best wishes

Krell

So many times I did prepare my set but this is because I know the time of my giig and I know the local crowd quite well and so far I never had a problem with that cause I love to make the my dancefloor and not the other way round.Offcourse if I play in new place with a new crowd I won't prepare my set!

Back to your question,
I honestly hate it when someone makes a request!I really do...
That's rude in my opinion although I used to do this my self way back when I used to like Acid Techno but once you start playing you'll probably agree with me that it is Rude and very annoying when someone makes a request cause sometimes it might mean that the prson making the request in not enjoying your set enough or sometimes it's genuine and the person asking is enjoying him self so much that he wants to enjoy the nigh to the top by listening to a track he likes so much.

BUT.....
In my opinion when someone asks for a particular track while you're playing your set (especially if it's a new set) that means that he/she is closed minded for new music and if he/she wants to listen to the tracks he/she likes they might aswell stay at home and listen to there music.

Lately I had a 3 hour set of almost new tracks and actually 2 guys at different itmes came up to me and asked me:
"Don't you play any Space Cat tunes? You should!
"Fuck man I played Space cat tunes so many times but today NO!If you don't like what I'm playing just go home and turn on space cat on your hifi!

My thoughts exactly.

I'm thinking of getting a T-Shirt made that says "I'd love to stop for a chat, but as you can see - I'm quite busy right now."

I've had all sorts - at Tribe Of Frog in Bristol a week and a half ago, some guy made his way up to the decks, looked as if he was about to speak to me, and then vomited all over the DJ table.

At one point, I'd just played Bluetech - Prayers For rain [Dub], two Mannasseh tracks, A Lee Perry/Upsetter tune and was halfway through a King Tubby mix of an Iroy track when some guy leaned over the mixer and asked - "Have you got any dub?"...

Best of all is during live sets.

I'm always getting people come up to me while I'm playing live - full on concentrating - tapping me on the shoulder and asking questions like "What kind of laptop is that?" or "How long have you been into music?" or - my favourite - "Who is on after you?"

The one I keep getting asked is "Have you got anything a bit faster?" - to which the only possible reply is "No. Fuck off."

Yeah or when some you girleys come up behind the dj stand dancing and asking you ridiculous questions so to start a conversation and end maybe end up in bed with you!!!!!!
And usually I have my wife looking at me in these situations

Lately there was this fat girl which came up behind the dj set and asked me:
"Wow this music is brilliant! What is it?
And I said "What do you mean what is it,It's trance ey"
And she said:
"Yes but what is it?"
My answer was:
"Can you please go back to where you came from and never return?"

Funniest thing I've experienced was when I was doing a live set and a guy walks up and asks me if I got an iPod or something he could check out and perhaps cue up a few tunes.

About the dj issue ... If you know the dj I think it's ok if you ask for a tune, seeing as he/she is a friend of yours and you both probably like alot of the same tunes. But as alot of people here have mentioned, asking a psy dj about some tunes might be considered disrespectful. It's not your average top20 club dj ...           ________________________

Just because you are a dj playing doesnt mean you have to be rude. You can answer in a polite matter, remember PLUR? Or was that the previous generation... Geez.
