hehehe a few years back i was playing in a party in thailand. it was about 3-4 in the morning so it was all going off and a girl came up and said: " hey could you play a song for me.... i cant remember the name of the artist or the name of the song but i can sing it... "

er go on then:

" first i was afraid, i was petrified...."

thinking back it was quite funny! but at the time i was speechless (actually afraid & petrified... hehehe)!!

back to the topic at hand, usually when people come and make a request, its music that i either never play, dont have or really dont like...
and as mentioned by many others it is annoying when you re doing you thing and people, generally off their faces, come and stick their mouths to your ear and scream....

Heh. Nice stories.

A couple of weeks ago I was playing somewhere and and this older lady came up to me and said "Do you have anything danceable? You can't dance on this music can you?" I looked at the dancefloor full of people and said "Sure, look at them!". Then she tried to start a whole conversation but I quickly said "I'm quite busy right now could you please talk to the organisers?" and turned back to the CDJs.

It made me laugh but this kind of thing is distracting. Actually it is worse when people ask specific tracks because then I automaticly think of the track (if I know it) and it distracts me from what I am doing and the musical flow I am in.

It isn't always the punters that are bothersome: This week-end I was just starting my set and someone (a well known producer actually) came into the DJ booth and was pretending to mix standing in my way in the small booth. Max and Davina from Sirius Isness where still there as they had just finished their live set, the lights guy was there doing his thing and a friend was filming. Pretty chaotic when you are just about to mix in your second track and the booth only really fits two!

I gently pushed the guy aside and instead of just understanding that he was in the way he asks me "What is the problem?" so I tell him that he is in the way...

I can understand such behaviour from someone that is wasted and doesn't understand about trying to get into the flow of things but from a sober, "experienced" producer that should know better? Sheesh!

So leave the DJ alone _especially_ when he/she is mixing two tracks.

Oh another weird thing happend last year. My girlfriend was dancing beside me on the stage and had _just_ given her a kiss. I turn round and this bimbo asks me if I she can have my phone number because she likes me. Huh?!? So I point to my girlfriend and say with a smile that she probably wouldn't like that too much. Then she asks if I have a brother ... sheesh!

But yeah, stay polite. People that bother DJs probably don't realise what they are doing.

Oh and a couple of months ago I was the one bothering the artist. A (well known) artist just started his live set but the the volume had dropped quite a bit compared to the DJ that played before.

I was on the dancefloor and people arround me where complaining so I go up to the guy, wait 'till he isn't too busy and tell him the volume has dropped and that people are complaining. He waves me away like I am bothering him. Whatever, your problem dude ...

I've had all sorts - at Tribe Of Frog in Bristol a week and a half ago, some guy made his way up to the decks, looked as if he was about to speak to me, and then vomited all over the DJ table.

Now THAT is the way to tell a DJ you don't like his tunes

and coming in close second....

Haha. Very interesting topic. I've had a problem with deciding whether I should request a track, but this was before I even went to the party. I thought about all that being rude and annoying the Dj and stuff, and I didn't think it would be proper if I bothered HALLUCINOGEN ))

Instead, before I went to the party i wrote "SPACE PUSSY" on a big piece of paper with bold, red marker, and waved the paper like a fool. I don't think Simon saw me waving it so I didn't get my song

There was a girl at one party. She really wanted to dance behind the dj all the time. There was not enough space so it wasnt really comfortable so she was usualy told to get out from the stage. But she kept trying with each new dj.

When I was playing, she came up again and started to dance, so I told her to stop. Instead of going away, she took stand next to me and was watching me mixing. Suddenly she drooped over the mixer and asked "hey and what is this button for?" and started to push various buttons on the mixer!! :o)))) ...

...and once I was asked to play some Rolling Stones track... :)           - http://sharpblaze.darknet.cz -

funny shit.

In the past, I'd been asked to play..

Funk
Led Zeppelin (during a chill 5 am set)
Kindzadza or Parasense (during a proggy sunset set)
some Full-on (during a hard nighttime set)
Madonna
James Taylor (!!!!)
James Brown ( )
Grateful Dead
Drum'n'Bass (all the time about 5 years ago - a few times this almost led to fights. DnB kids can be just as fanatical as Psy people)

and my all time favorite..

It happened the first time I ever played out - I was playing some old Flying Rhino like Darshan and Green Nuns, and a kid came up to me and very respectfully said: "Hey, I do like what you're playing, but could you maybe play something a bit more trancey?"

          ..it's just another party..

I almost never plan my sets, unless I deal with a completely new field where I dont know the music very well, but with the time, so I believe DJ should train at home to be ready for any possibility coming, and flow with his crowd.

I also don't mind ppl coming and asking for tracks.. I usually wont put them because they ask impossible things as Reggae or Skazi while I play progressive set - and that is really funny. BUT

IMO a good dj has to know how to chit chat on the stage and create overall easygoing feeling. It is not that concentration is not very important - it is, and so are good mixing skills and right choice of tracks, but still... When a DJ shows a confident and easy going, flowing atmosphere on the decks, chit chatting here and there and doing his work, that is the right one for me.           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

i play Minimal and usually kick off the party....
i dont think there was even one party that some one didnt come up to me with a locked jaw and exploding on E saying "hey man can u put on somthing fatser????" and since it happens so often i have a set answer "look,im just here for the start....the DJ after me is a KILLLAHHHHH DJ and he will knock your sox off" works perfectly and allways ends with a smile.......
Funniest request from me.....this girl came up to me in a club about a year ago and asked for "Enigma"....sorry dont have it.....

Cheers.
