First off, I am a hardcore Psytrance enthusiast, so naturally, i see slightly more value in the Psytrance scene. Still, i am a VERY open minded and honest person, and i see immense and great values in burners as well. I just wish that more people went both ways! So here I go:

Burners are great... when the music gets dull, repetitive, monotonous, or just boring, its great to have fire spinners and burners around so we can relax, and watch them perform. their skills with the fire are amazing and much appreciated by trancers and non-trancers alike!

at the same time, when you get sick of sitting on your but and staring at someone do the same tricks over and over again, you eventually want to get more involved in a collective recreational activity, such as tribal trance-dancing, which is what Psytrance is for. when we are done watching individuals perform one at a time, or 2, 3, 4, 5 at a time, then we can all put down our fire toys, come together as a Tribe, and unite our minds, spirits, and energies on the dance floor, through the intensely-stimulating frequency of Psytrance.

Burners and Trancers go hand in hand, but in my opinion, dancing as a tribe is just a little cooler than focusing on an individual / small group fire performance.

Ill admit ive never been to Burning Man, but heres my opinion.

If I think of burning man as I currently understand it, but then pretend / imagine that most burners are going with the focus of doing some tribal trance-dancing... the fire spinning would still be there, the crazy art and deco would still be there, but since everyones primary intention was to immerse themselves into a collective dance tribe, everyone would get more out of it. everything would be just as beautiful, the art would still be there, the fire would still be there, the crazy costumes and cars would be there, but since people would be more focused on a group activity as opposed to their individual creativity, then maybe the result would be a greater experience for everyone!

to sum up my opinion, they both are nearly equally important, and they certainly compliment each other, but music is much more uniting then burning IMO, while still allowing for each individual to be unique and not have to pick up a pair of poi or something.

music is just slightly more rewarding IMO, since it unites masses more efficiently than does fire performances. IMO.

and in response to the fact that ive never been to BM... i truly do plan on going. next summer is hopefully it for me... if all goes well and i get into medical school, i will be celebrating by experiencing BM. i am open minded and appreciate many, many things, and i surely want to feel what its like to be part of something that big, in the middle of a freakin' desert. even if its not as rewarding as a truly powerful psytrance-dance experience, it will still be rewarding in many, many ways.

more people should push for unity and openmindedness rather than taking sides and only discussing why they think one side is better than the other . Yes, monoculture is bad, but surely there should be less segregation and more cooperation between Burners and Trancers. Everyone can compliment the other side more often IMO, and everyone could step across the line and check out the other side more often! If anything, trancer's that check out BM at some point in life, and develop a greater sense of acceptance of burners, may return to their Psytrance community with a great appreciation for what they had to begin with. Expand your boundaries!

oh and FYI i am not totally blind to burner culture... have many friends who have been to BM and are continuing to go, and i also spun fire poi for nearly 2 years, allowing me to interact and affiliate with many burners.

fire unites, trance unites, i wonder what would happen if fire and trance were more united...?
