not to beat a dead horse with a stick.. but that same wiki entry goes on to mention a broader definition in terms of an "absence of belief" regarding these things. There's just better things to worry about, like good psychedelic music!

And by believing that you're automatically wrong.
I say: we can never know for sure who is right and who is wrong. The best we can do is examine the evidence and only then make our minds. Certain beliefs tend to render us unable to do this with an open mind. Like say if you truly believe that some being created us, then it's way difficult to examine the evidence speaking for evolution with an open mind. Atheism might render us unable to examine the evidence speaking for creationism with an open mind, but then again no such evidence has ever been put forth. We should establish some ground rules thou. Like for example I'd say the burden of proof lies on the one making the claim, you know, innocent until proven guilty and all that. If you claim that there is a god, prove it, till then we must assume that there is no god.

My conviction is that lack of conviction is the best solution in this debate - giving other opinions respect and allowing for possibilities that do not fit in with my world view benefit of doubt and an open mind to their ideas is a value which should be striven for. Of course - I do not believe that I am perfectly at that standard. I do not believe I have yet found the perfect path, because I do not feel that all my problems are solved or on the way to being solved.
I did not claim that there is a God governing the universe. I personally find that improbable, and a solution which does not fit with certain aspects of the world. In the same line of reasoning: saying that no God exists is making up your mind before you have enough information to draw that conclusion. BUT, both philosophies have certain merits. Why can't one take the best of both worlds?
It is easy to find faults in systems of belief, because none are perfect. People have faults... one has to wonder if we will ever be capable of reaching a perfection that can encompass us all.

i read a few posts from the last page and i wanted to add something about einstein.
http://www.yoism.org/?q=node/173
check this website. it has some very original ideas and videos about modern psychedelic atheism:)
and also this quote from the website:
EINSTEIN ON GOD:
The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.
....
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the Mysterious — the knowledge of the existence of something unfathomable to us, the manifestation of the most profound reason coupled with the most brilliant beauty. I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, or who has a will of the kind we experience in ourselves. I am satisfied with the mystery of life's eternity ....
. This is the basis of cosmic religiosity, and it appears to me that the most important function of art and science is to awaken this feeling among the receptive and keep it alive.
END OF QUOTE
so may be rest a bit about einstein and what he said?:) |

The best part about this debate is no matter how hard we try to prove or disprove his existence, we will still never know. Its like when prak says 42 is the ultimate answer and confirms that it is impossible for both "The Ultimate Answer" and "The Ultimate Question" to be known in the same universe as they will cancel each other out and take the Universe with them to be replaced by something even more bizarre that we wouldn't know where to begin explaining things.
Creationism on its own is absolutely baseless. How on earth or space or time could something that made us , not have been spawned by something else in return ?
Science and spirituality aside we are logical beings and logic i believe is a great tool in helping us answer this 'massive fucking mystery' called life.
I dont understand no string theory and black holes and have no idea for how long the universe might have existed or what caused it but i've always tended towards believing in spirituality , some higher power that is inexplicable and governs the dynamic that determines future actions/results through past causes that took place or ever will. We're living in a continuum that our puny minds will never be able to fathom, where no belief is wrong or right, just different perspectives that leave us in a perpetual hunt for that elusive understanding . I applaud the scientists for trying their level best in trying to understand the functioning of the universe through constructs that theoretically sound fabulous, the actual functioning of which confounds us all. (maybe the pseudo - scientists here can offer some light here as to what is the closest science has come to answering how did everything come about )
I'm of the opinion and deduce that the universe has always been , there is no creator and we are just going about our motions as thinking beings to find an answer to a question that has a very slim possibility of being answered in a way that will satisfy us all, if at all there is any question to be answered in the first place ?

i think before getting the ultimate answer, we should figure the ultimate question out. and on the other hand I am very curious on how would look our lives then and our world if we had answers.
that's why i think some things we can better keep searching for, i am of the opinion that this will to understand and search for the answers keeps the life intersting, otherwise what's the point of all?
anyway indeed is an endless discussion and it's been discussed since our existance.
for sure physics and mathematics are trying to explain the whole thing and i must say thanks to that we have explored and discovered so many things which we use daily and make our lives easier.

does it make any difference if I am or not ?
the answer is hmmmmmmmmmm NO difference at all
but I as a human being exist and it does not bother me if my life does not touch yours who only can be seen on these blue walls but if it does I exist for you...
So you see GOD can only be felt when his existence is proved when that supreme intelligence works for you when you need the most and then it does not matter whether one is religious or an atheist ................................
by and large both religion and atheism is again a religion coz its like following an ideology , ..... No!?
To focus sometimes you need to spin hard on your soul's axis..... just don't ask how and what it means ;) |
