Novation bass station for price
Arturia minibrute for quirkyness and something unusual

Nexus (ken macbeth) for sound
Or a Muug sub phatty if you drink chrystal out an african babies skull (and dont fucking start)

maybe dark energy for sound vs price , i enjoy more the sound than newer little mono like bass station ect it seems

moogs ,fr xs , oberheim out of the newer stuff but these are the most expensive too i think..

I really liked the DSI Mopho SE. It's the same as the standard Mopho but has the control/finish as the Prophet 12. Super smooth & nice analog sound. If the Sub Phatty hadn't been on sale at 30% off at the time of have gone it as my mono of choice. I might one day even get it just too has a DSI           Cuntus Maximus.

for what its worth, i went to a music store in frankfurt here and had an afternoon with almost all synths mentioned here just before christmas:
pulse 2, sub/slim phatty, bass station 2, mini/micro brute, ms 20 mini.

ms 20 mini: sound wise quite good, twisted little machine. screamy filters, lots of tweaking to be done, easy to get early psy trance sounds, however: built quality is a fucking joke, i would never ever buy this thing, even thouhg the sound is nice. the keyboard and knobs are the worst i have ever ever seen. the whole thing feels like shit. its just not fun tweaking a filter knob that makes you feel it falls off. horrible! this thing would kill for 100 bucks more with proper built quality.

mini/microbrute: i was suprised actually about these two. i thought i would not like them that much, but they actually sound quite nice! when not driven hard, you get a smooth and creamy sound, something i thought they wouldnt do well, but they do. built quality is absolutely fine for the money, layout is fine as well. fun to play instruments, with own sound to them that makes them desirable! the harder metallic edge of the sounds is not so much for me, even though i like hard and metallic, but just not like this.

bass station 2: oh yeah baby. this thing got me inspired. i dunno why, but after some time this thing and i wanted to have fun, the layout and envelopes are fun to tweak, sound is good, acidic and bubbly, especially the acid filter. its just fun to play this thing and has (for me) the most appealing layout to work with. the sound is quite nice as well, but just nice, and nothing high end or really special. it sounds very 90s all over the place and is a good all round bass and lead mono.

the moogs ( slim/sub): they sound almost identical when played without drive. the drive of the sub is way smoother and so its sound is more "vintage" if you want to say so. both built like tanks, filter quality insane. i had a slim phatty for 6 months and did not like the layout. the sub is (of course) much nice to work with as it has all the extra knobs. it is defo a tempting synth from concept and the built quality is superior to all the others, i just do not like the classic moog sound so much, would take the bass station with its rolandy character over these any time even though the moogs ooze quality all over the place.
if roland would build synths with this quality that would be a wet dream, but hey, intellijel has taken over that job ;-)

waldorf pulse 2: takes some time to get used to the interface and of course its nothing like a one knob per function thingy. the sound range is very versatile, overall the sound is on the harder edge for most uses, crystal fucking clear but not vintage / analogue. still, this might be the only one that is tempting enough for me to buy, you can make some nice chords/pads with it, and is has the driest bass i have ever heard of the small synths. not as big as a moog bass that you need to eq the shit out of to fit in a mix, no: the pulse bass is SO big AND tight that it is unbelievable. + has a very good software controller (almost access ti style) to work with.

so all in all, i might get the pulse 2, but i have already ordered and mutable instruments ambika so i will wait for that baby to arrive. my guess is i won´t need the pulse anymore ;-)

x0xb0x (600€ custom Andy Pledger build): I am a sucker for acid lines and acid basslines.

Moog Slim Phatty (575€ sold as new on eBay): I love its sound, have gotten used to the interface and I do anything I want very quickly.

Moog Minitaur (599€ new): Best bass synth I've ever owned. Great for low key leads and basic synth FX. Best raw sounding Moog out of the new ones, imo.

But I think 2014 is the year I am going to start building a modular again. Already have a good few gigs confirmed, so the cash will come.
I miss patching cables in.

pulse 2 seems really intresting to me but it may be full of bugs
