honestly the labels should atleast contact the ftp owners and ask them to stop whatever they are doing and maybe say a few words about a law suit if this is not done..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

Here's an example of what Traveller is talking about (targeting the owners of FTP/Napster type sites)

@ Elysium Project: ok delete that sentence... (it was based on my common sense and i may well be wrong on that). and i didnt want to excuse the downloadingmp3thingy with my thread either.

i was just discribing the situation as i see it. if u see most of the faults on the customer side (maybe ure even right on that), this wont help u to sell more records.

why are ppl paying 150 euros for original gucci sunglasses, when u can get a copy for a few euros? its cos its cool to have the original the real ones not just a cheap imitation... and thats what should happen with records, it should be cool to have the original sexy super heavy weight vinyl in ure hands and not just a crapy mp3 cdr... thats what i was trying to say with my thread...

Soulseek is a much greater thing, it takes 1 minute to download the program, 30 seconds to install, and the interface is so friendly that even 11 years old kids can use it.
Post an unreleased track on the top 10 this month and next month it's there for everyone to take. Also it has a hundread rooms for people ask each other what to take and trade...
It's through Soulseek that 90% of the psytrance tracks are downloaded. The FTP is for a select group of WORMS that trade fake mp3...
Easy solution: find a way to SHUT SOULSEEK DOWN.

AND THOSE WHO WILL NEED TO CATCH (police for example) ARE TRADERS TOO ! (maybe not trance but they do download illegal stuff)

An endless issue... and we still have a hard time finding sound facts IMO.

What I know for sure :

1. The worldwide CD sales decreased by 2,8% in 2001, and by 8,8% in 2002.

2. A lot of people happened to discover Psy-trance thanks to the Internet for a couple of years.

What I would like to know :

1. What is the % associated with Psy-trance releases ? I saw contradictory facts here and there. Some say the label sales went down 50% last year, which I think is a bit hard to believe (wouldn't they have all shut down then ?). Others say it's the growth of sales which has stopped, and it's not the same thing because...

2. for me, the people who discovered Psy-trance through the Net are not necessary meant to become hardcore Psy trance fans. Let say 10.000 people (randomly chosen figure !) knew about Psy trance in 1995, they were hooked by the sound, and now they're true fans of the genre, buying their stuff. Today, 2003, let say 100.000 people know Psy-trance. But 80% discovered it by downloading everything they find on the Net (so-called download-addicts), they like it, as they like Jungle or Detroit Techno or whatever.

What's the result ? the hardcore fan figure is still the same ! i.e. those who will bother to buy albums. I think it's very consistent with what A. Rosengren told us a few weeks ago, when he happened to roam on a p2p forum, with people collecting psy-trance tracks like they'd collect tree leaves.

Conclusion : I wouldn't be surprised if the sales haven't changed since, let say, 1996. And I'm not sure Psy trance is made to become mainstream (and lots of you agree I'm sure). Sad but true : artists sweating pain and money to make great works, and the only additional audience they get are leechers on the Internet robbing them and who won't even bother listening to their tracks, too busy downloading the work of another artist.

Of course, my "explanation" is very VERY caricatured. In particular, some acidfreaks probably discovered Psy through Internet, and now buy albums, whereas former Psy lovers probably stopped buying and are only downloading now. But I believe the general trend I discribed is correct. And to be sure...

...DOES ANYONE HAVE PRECISE FIGURES ABOUT THE DROP OF PSY TRANCE CDS SALES ?

thanks.

J.

I've been trying to think this through, so here goes:

A) The best selling trance CDs of all times are NOT close to huge sales. Even with all of the massive exposure of late (via the internet and otherwise), the best selling CDs of the trance world are not from the past 2 years even when the scene has more than doubled in size during this time.

B) CD Copy protection is useless, as it can always be worked through (the whole regional coding concept for the DVDs delayed that technology's release by nearly a year, and was hacked in no time at all, and that's just one example), so piracy will NOT be stopped. As long as you're talking about digital media, you will always be able to make an exact copy of the data. Instead of compressing, people will just send the CD image on the internet, bandwidth is not a problem anymore.

C) You can target a few people to set an example - but you won't be able to catch everyone, and the RIAA (the only organization big enough to actually do something) will NOT help the labels which aren't major contributers to it. Trance labels are just too small. The best example is this - the only software piracy which ever gets prosecuted is for Microsoft applications, as they fund the war against software piracy themselves. For all you people that have a cracked version of Cubase, no one will bother looking for you, let alone sue you.

... in short, the negative side of the trading phenomena can't be avoided in the trance scene, and a solution isn't even close to being found. The damage to the labels and artists can only be repaired by buying music. It's not hard to bring the labels to a place where they can stand their own ground (instead of the massive bankrupcy trend of the past few years) is by increasing the percentage of buyers from the listening crowd, as it's been decreasing in a more rapid way than the growth rate of the scene.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
