Hang on a minute, we were there in the 80s, and we did not destroy the place, nor did we abuse the local deities, we respected the Konkani people and no party was ever done without their consent, except for one event courtesy of Goa Gil!

He was the one who HAD to do a party in Anjuna the same day an elder died, thus ruining the season in Goa in 89!

In 1990 the Israelis came, pissed all over Shiva temples, fucked things up even more gloriously, and a year later Colva beach became a tourist resort.

That was when Goa got completely ruined. The free spirit was gone, travel agencies such as TUI set up shop, bought the land off the Konkanis for little more than a loaf of bread and then drove them out, ruining their livelihood and making sure the locals did not get a piece of the cake, something that the hippies in the 80s also never did. Charter tourists came in and abused Konkani children sexually, the Konkanis who complained about that were forcibly removed from land that was theirs for many many generations, and soon the Konkani locals wished the old times back with the hippies only, and sorry to say in this forum, without Israelis and charter tourists...

So before you choose to listen to someone who hates hippies, you might want to get the whole story before you accuse them (essentially me and my friends from back then) !

@ Colin, if you're afraid of smoking a joint in public, no need to go to Uruguay, you can do that in downtown Vancouver without getting into trouble. The reason why I picked up on Uruguay, is because from what I have heard (which is by no means a certainty) the country seems to be very open to young people and parties, not just pot!

THIS!

Are you sure he's not getting mixed up with the mainstream tourists? Like the ones that come in charter flights from, what earlier was primarily the UK, and nowadays is increasingly from Russia? Because it's that massive scale tourism that led to the mushrooming of Hotels and Resorts over beautiful paddy fields, and picturesque hills.

mass uk tourist invasion is fucking scary ! they think they are at home everywhere on tath fucking world

The problem is not "hippies" that smoke chillums, take acid...etc..etc. The problem is tourists who drink more than they can handle.
And alcohol is legal.

Bare in mind that parties had been somewhat "banned" for the last few years and it was the locals that wanted the parties back.
In any case the locals are reclaiming their land and set new rules on how this whole thing is going to work from now on.

You can love this music, take drugs AND be nice to the locals and nature.
One does not exclude the other.

I was thinking the same. At least in terms of it being a freestate. When I was in Goa, Goa was truly free, something it was not anymore in 94 or thereafter... I would love to find a place on earth that is as free as Goa once was!

I agree, was there recently for a party and didnt enjoy Goa the way I did years back. It has become so commercial now. Its not the same anymore. For the 1st time I didnt enjoy my travel to this placed I once loved and wanted to always go back.           Mushrooms make you do crazy stuff. Look at Mario he jumps on animal heads and fights with dragons.

sounds fair enough. the exploitation of third world countries for the pleasure of the rich man had taken pretty grotesque dimensions in the last years.

and as far as the question of the thread is concerned: there is always a better place than goa. it is in the own mind. fully independently existenting. it is everywhere and in the same time nowhere to touch. it is imaginative and always a vector that feels good and accumulates visions.

Some places on this earth must remain the exact way they are. Sunland is big and has many places possible to handle a number of people more than something ordinary.

i will see goa in march or april. april has so far been the best time to do this since the nineties. just a short visit, it is difficult to stay there for long because it feels quite wasted, nostalgic, surreal. nowadays it rarely happens that you kind of didn't notice that you've been around in goa for two or three months and thought it was just a few weeks. time is now slower in goa.

well at least i have to decide fast where i spend 4 free weeks. if an isratrance visitor opens this thread he would probably be very thankful to know what's up in uruguay....

oh yeah Uruguay is the first country where marihuana is legal now since very short time. Seems very interesting country to me too. I believe there are lots of places on this planet that are atleast as special as goa once was.
Hovever, am couriuos what's happening in Uruguay apart of free smoking? Afaik it is limited to 40 grams a month that would be absolutely ok. Dunno anything else about this country. I'm going to visit marakesh in a few weeks, hope to find something special there too.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

It would right? I'm very serious to leave everything behind just to be a part of growing a new scene
