I see people saying that its a good idea to take your instrument and pan it 100% left, and then another and pan it 100% , or other variations of the %. Does this mean you are making duplicates of the track, so you have two identical tracks and then pan those to different L or R%, or just the single track panned to a different area? It makes more sense to me that you would have two identical tracks panned to different positions to create the stereo wideness, but I don't really understand panning yet.

It doesn´t have to mean that ure duplicating the tracks.
Probably they mean that they have a melody or something like it, and they pan one note to the left and next to the right(or how ever you want).

You can also duplicate a track and use 2 mixer channels panning them differently, as you say. Its cool to do this and add different effect to the different channels. Then the same instrument will play on both ears(where ever you panned em) and morph from left to right with the designated effect.

Panning is a creative element to give more depth to ure music. Everything is up to you, if you would like you dont have to do anything.           .

Sometimes its only for creativity but sometimes its also to avoid frequency clashing.           www.soundcloud.com/kabbalisticvillage
