i know its not difficult to achieve..BUT i have heard tracks on ere that the stero field and imaging above the foundations (kick bass) are outof this world...surly it aint done by just tweaking L4 AND R4 or hard left etc etc. do u know wot i mean?,, that 3d scape and the abiltiy to do this to about 4 or 5 different sounds at once... and they all fit not conflicting! how just how lol.ive got most plugins but still no where near the brilliance of the wideneing of sounds that can be achieved and wot ive heard.-before mastering also.
your thoughts?

Pan+reverb+eq+volume

Sounds that are far from you are:

1)Quiter
2)Have less high-frequencies
3)Have more reverb (you hear more reflected signal than direct)

Also, when you hear the sound that is located left from you, you not only hear it louder with left ear, also it comes to your left ear earlier and slightly eq'd in comparison to what you hear with the second ear.

Try think this way and play with these parameters.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Putting some bread and butter reverbs on busses helps with the CPU as you can send any channel to that buss yet have only one reverb plug in. So for instance you open a couple of tight plates, a medium spring reverb and some exotic long reverb algorithm. So you have 4 reverb plug ins and you cover all your basic reverb instances for the whole track.
Another thing is long reverse reverbs on busses and sending one percussion hit, vox or synth note to create some nice and twisted background reverb textures in a striped down part of your arragnement.
One tip, try side-chaining the kick on long reverb algos n driving the compressor relatively hard for that fantastic vacuum reverb effect on long reverb tails everytime the kick drops. Been doing that on breakbeat and techno tunes for years. Sounds great in trance tunes as well.

Peace out.

Locating sounds has to do with timing and the effect of the masking your own face has on the relative spectrum that arrives on your right ear (speaking for a sound source that is located on the left). Then you must also consider that for a sound that is coming from the left, the direct sound will be stronger in the left ear and you'll get relatively stronger early reflections hitting your right ear, not because they are actually "louder" but simply because you perceive them that way (depending on room size, shape and material). The decay tail sounds like its coming from pretty much everywhere as the reflections fill the room. This effect is easier to understand using short sounds with loud transients.

Peace out.

http://www.myspace.com/discohooligans (the trance stuff)
http://www.myspace.com/nectunes (the techno stuff were this is more obvious on the deep mix of Glowing Red)
Or do a search on "nectarios" on beatport or got to http://www.streetwisemusic.co.uk/index.php?searchStr=nectarios&_a=viewCat&Submit=Search to hear some of my older records where you can hear the sidechaining thing all over the place.
Some people like the pumping background, some hate it. Its a matter of taste I guess.

I route the kick's output on a buss. then simply use that buss for sidechain input on whatever I wanna drop the level on every kick trigger.

Say you have a long reverb on buss4, your signal chain for a basic reverb send, would be reverb-->EQ-->compressor.
Then you'd select the kick drum as the sidechain input for that compressor and drop the gain of the reverb tail on every kick trigger.
Simple as that.
Thanks for kind words people

Thanks mate. We started making trance tunes relatively recently and we are putting the finishing touches on our first LP. Sorting out a "decks and FX" (I prefer that term as it is more honest than sayin "live") set on Jordan's new Macbook so hopefully we'll sort something out.
Jordan is supposed to play a DJ set soon anyway.

Peace out.
