If people dont have a credit card and stilll collect originals, they must be lucky to live in countries where u can buy new releases from a shop, you cant in india and im sure many other places where trance is gaining popularity... dont labels want to sell to these places?? or we not good enuff??

I fully agree with Raoul V here. Buying music online and getting it delivered on your doormat is a big hassle for many countries in the world. And on top paying the postal money can buy you a cd digitally. Like I said before you don't need a credit card or bank account, you can always ask a friend or so. But also we shouldn't think that people in India or Brasil or any other non-western country are so poor that they don't have a credit card.
I am very lucky living in Europe and be able to order my cd's by cash on delivery.

Dear Mocca,

I can only agree with you, and i would like to add that India, Brazil and of course China are the worlds BIGGEST emerging markets! Immagine the population of India and China combined together...and think about the market opportunities.....

Obviously the best way to "get" those places is the web! I also need to say, that at the moment the chinese market is not totaly ready for the "psy" scene...but hey...if you want to keep your business running int the coming years...then you should definetely consider those markets as priority number ONE!

All,

I'm weighing in here a bit late as i've been away recently without computer, but i feel it necessary to say something as a label owner. So to touch on some of the things being mentioned here:

As a record label, i fee it is absolutely necessary to offer our releases digitally. PsyBooty is about to release our 2nd comp on March 27th, and this will be the first digital release. It has always been my plan since the beginning, but I have been trying to find the best solution. This is the way the industry is moving. This is what consumers (or a significant portion of them) want. If we avoid that we end up exactly where the major labels were when the whole Napster thing blew up - caught with our pants down scrambling to keep up with the trend because we had our head up our ass not paying attention to what fans of our music are interested in.

not to be harsh...

Now we've gone the digital distributor route for the moment - www.INgrooves.com. They cut the label the best deal I have found in digital distro land, their ability and reach is vast, and they put effective promotion and marketing campaigns behind their releases! You won't find many that do that. I think digital distro has it's advantages. For example, the distributor can get it into far more digi-shops with far less effort and time than an independent artist or label can, thereby reaching more countries and listeners. And, yes, mine puts promotion and marketing behind it, which is built in. That takes an individual artist or label a heaping load of valuable time, indeed, promotion itself can be a full-time job.

On the issue of pricing - i have to agree that the best way at the moment to keep the price of downloads down to at the very least equatable to CDs, the label-owned download shop is the way to go. This is the model I wanted to go with at the beginning of PsyBooty. However, as mentioned above you are sacrificing the breadth of distribution afforded through a digital distributor, and the cost of operating the shop adds additional expense to the label. I tend to think that because the digital distributors have such established relationships with the various digi-shops that they do have the power and ability to keep prices down. I think it's a matter of finding the right distributor, and to a certain extent, shops charge what they will charge. So the price is out there - it may not be available for every country, but if you sniff around a bit, i'm confident you'll find a fair price. Complete control over the price will only come with a label-owned shop.

Lastly - a note on money going to the artists for digital downloads. It is US law that the artist get 50% of all net revenue from digital sales, AND that such revenue is not recoupable against an advance on royalties. This is what we do at PsyBooty, and that is one hell of a fair deal for the artist.

Cheers!

Im a late comer to this discussion too but a newly converted downloader. The digital download meduim is not a replacement for CDs or vinyl but a different medium in addition to the releases already made such as CDs. I still buy CDs but also download individual tracks and know sevaral DJs that are quite happy using 320kbps Mp3 in their sets without problems.

Psy Trance is sparse on the net however www.audiojelly.com do cover the genre with downloadable tracks from Iboga, Digital Structures, Hom Mega, Synergetic, Boom, Kagdlia & Astral projection's Trust in Trance label.

100% agree! The problems is that even if you have a credit card in East Europe for example, any you wanna buy cd's from internet , the distributors don't send cd's here, or sometimes they send only if you buy 20 Cd's or more.
And this is too bad because east europe is a good & fresh sceen for psy trance.
For example:
What do you say about 4000 copy's of a psytrance album sold only in Romania?? Well it is real ! But the cd was distributed only on stores (not internet!!!), on every big city of Romania ! The same rule can be aplyed on every country, but for this there is need for good distributors and totally diffrent strategy of promoting and selling music !!

Just out of curiosity, what cd was that? 4000 copies in romania alone? Most psy artists wish they would sell that worldwide...
