ive found in all my years of psytrancing that the tempo has been gradually shifting upwards, and much of what people call dark is really just fast as fuck. i think that this has caused some serious changes in the way outsiders perceive the scene...
the tempo directly affects the dance, what do you think about that. what tempo do you prefer to dj, produce, dance, listen to at certain times of the day and night at parties and otherwise?
ok i expect nothing less than a full on outburst-a-thon.

i like 150 BPM for night time psy.

Each 16th note is exactly 100.000 milliseconds long... comes in handy when recording automation on delay times by typing in numerical values...

and it's not so fast that it causes discrete bass pulses to blur together (or causes discrete bass pulses to be so short that they carry little information and inadequate energy) ...

a question worth answering...

for me, it depends on the style and my state of mind - not necessarily the time of day. though faster tempos tend to work better during night - perhaps because they help fill in the darkness. during the day, when there is less left to the imagination, something more direct, emotional, and/or simple, with a more comfortable pace tends to work better. there are so many exceptions though.

playing or dancing, it's either gotta be fast within reason (155 +/-), 147ish for fullon, or in the 120s for something minimal, housey, techy, progressive,etc... zenon tracks are the exception...pretty much anything outside these parameters doesnt seem to grab hold as well...i'm sure others will think differently.

I like the 145-150bpm range. I usually pitch my dark tracks to 150 or below if they are anywhere above it. I personally love anything from 145-160bpm, but I tend to stick to the 145-150 range so I can mix dark and power/full-on together.

The beats per minute of a track doesn't determine how fast a track sounds. In fact, the slower the BPM of a track ---> more space exists between each beat, allowing it to accommodate more bass, and hence giving the producer the chance to produce something that actually sounds faster even though the BPM is lower If you have heard Ghreg On Earth's, "Sigilweaver" album from 2005 for example you will know what i am talking about - he has some pretty fast sounding 142-144 BPM tracks.

However, to answer your question :

148-150 is superb fun mixing, it just works for me.
I would produce between 146-150.
I love dancing to anything from 145-154 & sometimes 160 during the peak as well.
As for listening, anything below 160. 154 is the highest i usually go

@ Parties :

148-160 at night
146-150 during the morning

@bluespectralmonkey... what do you consider fast as fuck? there is a lot of nightpsy being produced between 146-150 BPM & i am not quite sure that is fast as fuck. Maybe if you are talking 154 + then sure it gets pretty fast, but 146-150 is just fine in my opinion.

Some artists try producing monsters at 160, 170 + but people like Polyphonia can do double the damage just at 150 hehe

So at the end of it all the ideal bpm range i would choose will be 146-154

Night psy all the way

I like slower, 140-145.

As Zmandan puts it, slower tempo means more room for bass. And it leaves room for groove, for HEAVY chunkiness. More room for percussion too.

The faster music gets, the more the kickdrum feels like a pop gun instead of a hammer.

I wish people would take up the energy by writing better music and not simply speeding it up.

very nice topic monkey. i think its all relative to the style of event, location of event, time of day, and as much as it pains me to say this, the prevelant substance at the event and or region.

(On a quick side note i think high bpm is getting out of control and i think proof of this fact is alot of hardcore and gabber djs are now playing dark psy in their sets. In fact in the midwest several former hardcore djs have moved to dark psy and brought their fans with them, its kinda the newest incarnation of music for that segment of the party scene)

but gettting back to the statement at hand
I think a indoor party is more condusive to high bpm music than a outdoor one. With a indoor venue, the confined spaces amplify the energy of both crowd and music, thus uping the intensity level. However this can also present a much more overwhelming expericance as well, so there is always the other side of the coin. In such cases as this, its always nice to have a chill room or prog room to escape to.

Personally im with Kri, for most full on, to even nightime stuff i prefer 142-148. Maybe brief excursions to 150. If its a more night time set.
But with more space for sound, the sound is always thicker, and fuller. and while maybe not as intense, carries more umph and punch with it.

With more morning chunky groovers i think 140-144 fits the bill quite nicely. Still has enough drive to cary the crowd, but backs down on the tempo for those that are feeling the drain of the previous night

and with more day time oriented prog and minimal
128-133.

Personally ( i might be alone on this though) Im all for assigning tempo speed limits for the time of day at shows. Even tapeing said speed limits to the mixer

a example of such for a outdoor would be

before sunset : 140 bpm max
sunset to midnight: 145 bpm max
midnight to 5 am : no limit
5am-8am : 150 bpm max
8am-10am: 145 bpm max
10am-noon : 140 bpm max
noon - 4:20 : 135 bpm max

I can't definitively answer this, as it's just dependent on way too many factors and varies from party to party for me. I'm general with Paradigm's timetable.

I'd also second zmandan's comment about bpm and perception of how fast a track is.

In general I'd like to see more 144-145 tracks being put out by "dark" producers. Comps like Meaning of Life, Dream Theatre, and Goods Carrier bring a smile to my face.

For a long time I was really annoyed when producers/djs would go over 150. These days, at least for home listening, there are some faster tracks and artists I really enjoy.

My favorite for listening (like, in the car) is 145-152. My favorite for dancing is 148-152, maybe 154. 150 is probably my most favorite... really holds my attention the best.

I like to dance to bpm ranges: 110-160bpm

In the middle of the night/mornin I like to hear somethin around 150... for sure...

I'll dj any range of bpms so long as the songs are quality and seriously well-crafted.

And finally,

I produce tracks anywhere around 80bpm to 180bpm and the styles/genres I try to focus on are... "Fusion, Idm, Ambient, Breakcore, Drum n Bass... and most recently... Minimal, Tech / Electro House, and a lil bit o PsyTrance."

0-160 bpm is the only way to fly.

as far as trance goes.
IT really depends on the style.
I like my house and progressive real slow 120-128 bpm

tech-trance+zenon recs 135-145

dark 148-155
ultimately there is good music in all tempos.
But has anyone noticed that it is very difficult to get people to dance wildly between 135 and 142. they sort of just shake and bob their heads. same with 150+           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

142-148 for psytrance.
I truly appreciate BPM on the slower side, especially when a track sounds faster than it is.

Try to slow down a 160 bpm track to 146 - it won't sound as groovy. Try to speed a 146 bpm track to 160 - it will still maintain it's dance floor qualities. (Just my observation)

For minimal, progressive, electro stuff - 130-138.

Anything above 150 lacks "depth" for me, though there are a few exceptions, and Furious is worth mentioning as an example of profound psy gabber.
