A BRIEF SURVEY: WHAT TEMPO DO YOU PREFER?

I should say, I prefer producing at 120-130 for techno. 120 for deep tracks, 130 crackin' techno, and everything in between.... when I play out this often translates to 125 to 135, though...

and my 150 psytrance tracks will get pitched down as low as 145 when played out, generally... unless during peak hours...

Well earlier in this thread i made a statement about enjoying 160 BPM "during the peak." I would however like to take back the latter part of this sentence as i just realized that isn't what i truly believe.

I see that some people here, for example, and with all respect bastardsamadhi ^^ who have said things like, "my 150 psytrance tracks will get pitched down as low as 145 when played out, generally... unless during peak hours..." So, do you really believe BPMs have anything to do with intensities?? In all honesty i doubt this because in each sub-genre, THE MOST intense tracks i know are all at the lower range of the BPM spectrum.

For example, with full-on we have tracks such as Absolum - Take Off @ 140 BPM but man oh man, throw this in your mix during a late morning set during the peak & i assure you that people will be running around naked.

Another example with the darkpsy subgenre this time is a track like Psykovsky - Compos Mentis @ 148 or Osom - Over Game @ 147...these 2 tracks are argueably the most intense tracks ever made IMO.

So my question now is, do you really believe the tempo matters at specefic times such as the peak? Or does it have to do more with the nature of each individual track irrespective of the BPM?

i tend to like the 140-150 range, but depending on the time and space can have different moods. driving, banging, groovin, etc... like paradigm and kri said also fitting the environment.

most of all i like there to be something interesting mentally, call and response sound play, cycling tempos, interesting time signatures, a bit of warped tempo feel, integrated with a nod toward world music themes before precision time keeping in music.

@zmandan:

I would say frequency (In the BPM sense, not the in spectral sense) and sonic density are equally important quantities, I never claimed BPM was the sole determinant of "intensity" .... ;-)

generally, I try to select tracks that continuously vary in density (typically with peak density at middle and/or end) and then use frequency (BPM/rate) in the typical way to bring up (or down) the overall intensity as the set progresses.

and yes, you're right, there are plenty of tracks that with a very high density and only moderate frequency/bpm...

I've been having this problem with a friend of mine, who always describes trance tracks as being "faster" or "slower" in relation to other tracks, when in fact he is not speaking for the relative speeds of the tracks at all. I try to get him to speak in terms of the density or "fullness" of the sound but it's hard to break him of this habit

I agree with Konflux on the notion that stuff above 150 loses some depth.

For me, the best part of "Psytrance" is the "trance" and for that you need depth, with emotional build ups, drops, etc.. For me, this occurs at 140-148bpm, though my personal favorite is exactly 145bpm. I mix at 145 (or close to) most of the time as well, and once I start producing I definitely see myself sticking at 145bpm.

I like the uplifting full on/morning stuff which is usually produced around 140-146.

For downtempo/prog, 128bpm seems to be my favorite average bpm. But hey, if it works, it works.

Depends on my mood...

Progressive: 125-135
Night-145-152
morning-140-146

Ideally, but I can dig pretty much anything. Those are the tempos I generally hover around in my own sets.

+1 about anything faster than 152, IMO. I can find stuff to like about faster stuff, but I really, really like the more psychedelic, slower stuff. 145-152 FTW. I love the 'trance' aspect rather than what seems like the 'stomp' aspect.

When I write music by myself, I tend to stay between 144-150. Not to say that I haven't made tracks faster or slower.. Hell, I've got one at 115 that I really enjoy, but don't play unless I'm closing a party. When I write with other people, all bets are off. With others I have a couple of tracks at 160+. I tend not to play them because for me ludicrous speed doesn't really carry my groove as well as I'd like in some of my sets and unless it was the very end it would really screw over the guy who was coming on after me.

One thing that I'd like to point out that hasn't really been touched upon is when you're writing a track, it doesn't really feel that you're going all that fast during the creation process. The only way you can really gauge speed is when you either mentally or physically compare it to something else that you know it's tempo.

Also as someone has mentioned previously, speed and intensity aren't synonymous. I have heard some really fast stuff that really had no percussion besides the kick drum that I couldn't really tell exactly how fast it was going. However, once you start putting in closed hi-hats, that's when you can tell really how fast something is.

Intensity vs. Speed was also something I tried to illustrate in my first album. I intentionally made one of the nastiest tracks on the album (California Sea Lion) at 142, and the grooviest more morning track (Spherechucker) at 150. It's all about the context of the track, and how much stuff you put in it. Sure if you've only got a few layers of stuff going on, it might not sound as intense as something swimming in layers, regardless of how fast it is.

Also the fast as hell thing depends on your outside influences, before going to see Gil within the past couple years, I didn't really hear so much 155+ stuff. I think especially here in the US that there's a bit of monkey see monkey do.

When I dj, I tend to try to play somewhere in between the speeds that the guys are playing before and after me. Now of course in some lineups that really doesn't work, but when I dj flow is key.

tempo is extremely element of sound and it can affect the difficulty of a piece of music in general....
i think that i don't need to be at the night to listening things above 160 bpm or in the morning to get 145/150....
in my opinion if i have the environment, the right peeps and the right tunes there will be not necessity to put an schedule to listening the beats per minute...........
