Even the first Shpongle cover is a blatant ripp-off of Pink Floyds 'relics' album. Uppergod Simon P. has hardly an excuse...he can play guitar decently, has a girlfriend with the voice of an angel and prolly knows hundreds of people that can play weird instruments. Enough ingredients to come up with something less recycled.

Ben Watkins of Juno Reactor simply invites a ten piece tribal act into the studio if a track needs some spicy drumming...And for a middle east voice sample Ben gets Natascha Atlas to do her singing thing.

And some studio jamming may enhance the Shpongle sound a lot...Imagine some sitar player on hallucinogetics going wild in the studio.

Ah, this i s a long debate.
is Sampling other tracks considerd as a new creation??

i think it is. cause it gives another prespective/innovative ideas about the same sound/ line ETC.
Ofcourse, gentic clones are never wanted

Another thing, many of the things ppl mentioned here is getting to the level of cheesy use of durg vocals / tribal chants etc.

Has anyone heard the saying " A mans (or womans) creativity comes not only from his/hers own ideas but from what he can conjure with others"

Personally I think its a little bit unreasonable to expect big time artists to write ALL there melodies, I mean they are expected to produce hundreds of tracks, each one can't be an idea built from scratch           Progressive, Full-on? Its all good <;}

I think its entirely reasonable to expect an artist to write all their own melodies...isnt this what being an artist is. I think the only time it is ok to sample other peoples melodies is when the melody is done with a certain sound that it is impossible for you to use otherwise for example a huge choir or tribal chanting, of course we dont have access to conduct our own choirs with our own melodies bligny shit poo knob bum

Tim i agree with your words, not only that, i know you live by them... from hearing your music (you know who gives me the auditory pleasure to enjoy your most amazing compositions at his place...) its easy to see that originality is highly regarded item on your list. lead by example.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

There is a difference between voices and melodies. I understand that not everybody has the money or connections to go down to Africa and record some tribal chanting.

But melodies are different, no excuses there.

Yeah I agree that an artist shouldn't just go ahead ripping off melodies left, right and centre, but if a artist uses a sample of a melody, for apart in their track I think its reasonable if a track is based around a melody that was ripped off then I can definately see a problem.           Progressive, Full-on? Its all good <;}

For GOOD sampling: listen to a Juno Reactor, Yello or FSOL track.

Juno and Yello play back samples at different pitches and make little melodies out of them... the chant on "Silver" is completely different from the original source (Baraka).

FSOL use "straight" samples, but add a ton of modulation and effects.

But most important is ORIGINALITY... you can rip off half a movie (FLA - Sex Offender) if it's done in a new way...           tiger got to hunt,
bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand.

Shpongle to me is a mix mash of all musical things from all around the world and the beauty of it is how it takes u through so many different experiences. So what if they took some tunes from certain places, I think its art anyways. Btw even in the beginning of day turned to night there are some samples of certain ragas from india, but they sound so gooood. with some other full on kinda artists using only copied melodies in their music then maybe they can be a little more original.
