why not?

I never understood this "respecting other people's beliefs" thing.

In my experience, "beliefs" tend to be a total crock of shit [my own included] and this insistence that we all respect each others' leaves me a bit mystified.

To me, a "belief" is an admission that inquiring thought has ceased.

By definition, a "belief" is an attempt to lay claim to some kind of "truth" in a Cosmos where nothing is certain.

There are people who "believe" that their way represents the "one true way" and are willing to kill and maim anyone who dares to disagree. How can I respect this?

Likewise, there are people whose "beliefs" are utterly abhorrent [to my sensibilities] - for example:

Am I supposed to respect these "beliefs" too?

Do you respect the "beliefs" of the Westboro Baptist Church?

For what its worth, I respect your right to hold onto any set of "beliefs" you choose.

More to the point, do you "respect their beliefs?"

-not neccessarily a belief signifies a collection of ideas that fit together and make sense of the world as we see it. I agree with you not to respect those pplz beliefs but having beliefs in general is a positive thing and when challenged by a dialectically opposing belief what results from their battle is a greater higher belief. Essentially beliefs are the stepping stone to a better world if treated correctly .

i see your point. i really do. and i agree with you on many of your points. in fact, you changed my opinion on a few things. but i guess you can respect peoples beliefs (or right to have a belief) without agreeing with it in any sense... even if they are as ignorant as the ones you pointed out.

edit: and to answer your question. no, i dont respect those you pointed out. its hypocritical, i know, but im telling the truth. its just too hard to give any positive motion toward such violent ignorance.

I don’t like getting all serious and heavy because that's not why i come to this forum but seeing as this is a thread of opinions about worshipping and belief i may as well give mine (for what it's worth).

I think there is nothing wrong with religion (and it's more benevolent ideals) in principle... and if it makes your life easier then go for it... but in my opinion, if a lot of the stuff some religious people actually believe wasn't covered under the banner of 'religion' they would be locked up under the mental health act

Religion to me is just something that was established a long time ago to keep uneducated people in their place and all it seems to do is cause suffering, repression and misery. The tsetse fly may have killed more human beings in the history of the world but as least the tsetse fly doesn't use nail-bombs.

That's not to say religion can't make you happy - but you don't need doctrine and bizarre dogma to be happy.

If you believe in your 'god' then you should also believe that he gave you a brain... one to use for logic and reasoning. I think more religious people should respect their 'god' by using it a bit more.

As Ott said, we should never be expected to respect peoples actual beliefs but should always respect their right to have that belief. Then again, i guess it's not easy to respect someone when you are picking bits of shrapnel out of your head... and that's if you’re lucky.

Sorry if i have upset anyone because that honestly isn’t my intention. This is just my opinion.

I don't want to sound like an hippy but if you can go through life not hurting others (and helping when you can)... and enjoying it for fucks sake... then that's a good enough religion for me.           Am i the only one who believes in solipsism?

It might seem a bit pedantic, but I think this small distinction is at the heart of a lot of conflict in the world.

I am sorry ppl, i guess by now u realized that this is not just a joke topic, although my intent is to make fun of certain things

And even though English is not my first language, i have some understanding of what some words mean...

First of all, i have as much respect for ppl who have their "beliefs" as much as i have respect for mentally retarded (or challenged) ppl

In better words, i feel sorry for all of u who chose Jesus, Allah, Zeus, or whatever other imaginary friends of yours, as a source of truth and explanation for all things and unlimited wisdom...

I hope this topic will make u understand how silly it is to believe in some sort of God...

some ppl say worshiping is not the right word ... but this is what ppl do they worship , they ware a cross , David star , they praise Koran , Torah , pictures of their god , they dress certain way , they do certain things, go to certain buildings( church , mosque , synagogue ) and do rituals ... That is all worshiping ... that is all silly

Now i am sorry if i offended anyone, but this is what i think

Nik, you said nothing to make us see "how silly it is to believe in some sort of God." please expand on why it is "silly."           The IsraTrance MySpace Group:
