Actually a pretty relevant question.
I'd say psytrance got a major step-back in 2012, and many of my favourite producers are not even producing anymore, maybe a single every now and then. And the stuff isn't even my cup of tea, like Sesto Sento and Myrah... The tunes back in 2009 used to be killerrr, the genre is still staying somehow strong... idk.. this is very hard to predict.

I mean come on, how did even "Trap" become a mainstream genre for young audience.

But there are always upcoming stars, and the genre never stops evolving. Though... would still be shocking and amusing to see fullon psytrance ever hit the mainstream.

Yet the genre has a certain appeal to players of the game "OSU!" and creds to tekken for always including a psytrance battle-theme..

as long as I'm alive man, and I'm sure there's plenty of others who think the same. even if there's no audience, the stuff stills needs to be done. there's something special about it, it's like it's some kind of new language in a way. Shit's not going anywhere. My 2 cents.

It will never die out, but was it ever alive in the commercial scene. It's part of a different unknown mainstream running through the background. Have to agree that today's Psy has evolved into something else. A while back at a party and it started with more of a mesh between Psy and Progressive House, almost like Ace Ventura - Presence.

Old school Psy was the best, back in the day with Nano records hitting it hard. Nano just had that iconic sound with all their artists. Then they signed Loud and it changed a bit. Yeah I think Loud is alright, definitely creative, but not really the Psy I love. More into the Biorhythm / CPU / Tristan scene.

Trap is a joke imo - I did not even give it 20 sec to play before I skipped it. Don't really know what that shit is.

Many Psy parties still around here throughout the year, so that's good, and in the evening, Day 2, it does pull out some fullon.. aaahhh blissful

We will have to see, though I doubt that some new amazing genre will replace it. There are just a limited amount of beat patterns you can create before going off the flow. And with Dubstep, DNB, Psytrance, Rock, Metal, etc. It's really all been done.

All that is left is hybrids - like the Trap crap. Dubstep actually started it.

It's ok, we have recorded it!

Just like reggae, funk and northern-soul, Goa will continue to exist with collectors rather than creators on stage changing one tune for t next. The mythology of the roots of trance/Goa is quite a romantic tale - so I predict that a nostalgia/closed retro scene will emerge as the main strand - especially in 20yrs or so if more of the first wave producers are no longer active.

Our parties have always been about the freaks - not just a psytrance soundtrack. Increasingly, myriad alternative stages will be replaced by more diversity within each scene and stronger connections to rest of music world will forge.

I think the question is whether retro-Goa scene will be integral to current psymusic trends or will it establish own circuits?

The notion that a really fixed genre blueprint can stretch to include fresh creativity seems optimistic - so I'm guessing that because of the resistance to change, it will simply be viewed as old-fashioned and an altogether new soundtrack will replace it. Stadium rock and disco excess maybe lead to rawness of punk. Big name psytrance acts waving at the crowds then pressing play might inspire freshness in a totally different direction...We need a new psychedelic underground!

well ,i won't die out ,like deathmetal in the end of 1999 many said it was dead but came bigger and better back, , its same like psytrance and goa its a underground scene so its have its ups and downs . So yeah there is a dip going on but the fire is still there ! and some of the psytrance what i hear i can't feel it ! melody's were the euphoric element in psytrance 1996 till 2012 you don't hear it that a lot it more grim . well it will come back at its old form ! BACK TO THE ROOTS

I agree, speacially when you have lsd on your brain.

Anyway, it's our job to keep this ''language'' alive

Psytrance died when all this dark shit came in, which just fries children's brains (on purpose).

I assume you refer to the dubstep scene back in 2012? Because i agree. Yet somehow i'm tempted to use the growling and roaring synthesis from that genre in fullon, and no i'm not thinking about Psystep.

nothing wrong with good dark psy. the problem is not a single sub genre, the problem is bad production and low standards. and people sounding the same between them, tons of them. no that I like the word, "dark", but I like a lot of music that gets the classification.

the scene was very prolific 10 years ago. this forum was bursting with activity. everyone wanted to make the fullon basslines, the leads...
the mother-of-all threads were always at the top.

the small promoters and the small producers are clearly doing it for the love.
there's always an audience. but it tends to be smaller than the mainstream events.
people get used to big crowds,so when you play to a sparse dancefloor.. it feels strange.

It wont die but will it become less popular? probably
The better question would be will psy trance loose its way? and that has probably begun to happen already.
Its very difficult to keep pushing music forward and doing new things, psy has been on the cutting edge of dance for a long time.           https://soundcloud.com/pro-gram-0
