There are several reasons to why there are so many new labels and new releases.
1. If you looked at the really larger labels and their discography, you will notice that a similar cast of characters is on most of their compilations. With 6 or 7 tracks given to artists that have been on all of the other compilations, it makes it difficult to get new blood in. Unfortunately in any music scene, the people with the bigger names will sell more copies of the compilation. Whether or not the song is phenominal or straight off the assembly line, people will at least check out the compilation due to the names that are on it. That is one the basis of music marketing. Like it or not, the trance scene is a very social/political scene and sometimes it really isn't about what you know, it's who you know.

2. It is true that there is little money in releasing music, but there is a reasonable amount that can be made from putting on events and performing live. What is the best way to get booked for live show? Release music. How can you release music if no other label will even give you the time of day?
Get a bunch of your friends together that make music and start a label. Sure it'll cost money to make a compilation, but unless you are gonna let a whole bunch of your stuff circulate through the MP3 mafia it's highly unlikely that you will be heard outside of your own community. Sure there are places like here where you can semi promote yourself, but when it's all said and done, you still are playing locally if at all.
3. Some people felt that they can provide something that other labels were not doing. A certain sound of music, or a conceptual idea, or something that isn't the stereotypical of what is currently on standard airplay. Some labels started from other artists who were on other label and wanted to take their sound in a new direction and not carry the signature sound of the previous label with them on their new direction.
4. Some artists just have so much music that they have made, that's it would be impossible to get it all out there on just one label or even by shopping around and putting tracks on several labels. The ultimate goal of an artist is to get their music out to the public. (NOT MAKE $$) Sure they could just put up a site as MP3's, but why not just put it on a cd with some artwork and make it available to people that will actually fully appreciate the music rather than as trade material? (I really don't want to get into another MP3 banter, but I did want to make a point.) In the end, I think a human beings ultimate goal is to do what they love and hopefully it will support them.

I make music so it can be heard by people in the best quality possible. If it pays my rent and allows me to live a nice lifestyle, great!!! But if it doesn't, it doesn't mean I am not going to continue to make music. That's why I have a job. So that all my neccesities are taken care of, and I can make this stuff to escape from the realities of being in the clutches of Capitalism....

the trance scene need only big labels.. so it can survive..

sounds like what s happening in the rest of the world aswell.... only big multinationals survive....
to keep the scene fresh there needs smaller underground labels to set the trends. the big labels then take these new trends and turn them into commercially viable products!

Columbia house will be releasing a compilation with some wizzy noise, Midi Miliz and many other artists..

Gaspard said it best, if there are only BIG labels, then the world will be run by WALMARTS.. they will eventually have the monopoly over it all, and the prices will drastically increase..

So many people see making music as a business, and i think this is wrong.. whats the problem with a group of friends releasing there music?? i think its great.. just like its great to have that small corner store owned by a minority. they just want to try and make a living, offering something new and different.. i think this scene needs MANY small labels, and the big one's should be there to help the small one's, not crush them..

but then again, in this capitalist world, i can only dream..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

SO TRUE!! But i'm not sure i will call them suckers. Personally i bought a hole lot of compilations earlier, cause it was easy finding good music..it was'nt two or three tracks that was good, with a "V/A" U got bigger chances for the hole cd to be great, and with the cd prices..at least where i live (Sweden), many people really can't afford 22-23 euros for 1 cd, so u end up buying compilations. But today i buy allmost only full albums, and i guess if u're a Dj it must be easy to go for the compilations...see ya'll in the woods..
