There are some examples of tracks being more than 15minuttes.

I think, the 6-8 minutte time frame fits the content best... Perhaps its also a matter of Djability and playability of the tracks vs the likelyhood of them being attractive for DJs.

After all, when you make a home listening album, you dont need to have a 20 minute track in order to keep the vibe and the flow going, since you can just fade mix the tracks on the CD.

But really, tracks could be 75minuttes long, but it would be impractical.

There are, however, several BRILLIANT long tracks - Deja Vu Project, Pleidians and so forth.

In Deep Trance / Progressive House, tracks are often 8-12 minuttes long. Giving a lot of room for mixing the transitions.

Yup, but those tracks start with a long buildup and end with a long outro, where sounds gradually disappear from the track. Sometimes you have to listen to 1 more minute of kick, hihats before the track is out. But indeed, it makes mixing easier.

Anyway, tracks could be longer in psytrance too IMO. A good trance-state is mostly conceived by tracks that are longer than 9 minutes. Even in genres like black metal there are groups which produce tracks from over 12 minutes (Check out Sin Origin's 'Night Aeternal' album for instance) and it works remarkably well. And that's speaking in a genre where most groups have songs of about the 3-4 minute mark. So, in psytrance it shouldn't be a problem.

Groups that make (or made) long tracks and worked good: Technossomy, Orichalcum, Fog, P.O.T.S., 12 Moons etc.

Anyway, I have a thing with longer tracks. I like tracks to be long, so that one track becomes a kind of journey on itself. Underworld did it right on their 'Dark & Long' album... that's a prime example of what I mean. Might not be psytrance, but it's kinda related. If you have never heard that album: check it out. It's the best Underworld ever did IMO.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

Lot's of artists used to make tracks around 9 - 12 mins. Nowadays it's all about producing "hits" around 6 -7 mins.           http://www.peopleagainstpeace.net/

I second Krell:

As a DJ, I will never play 15min (or longer) tracks, except if I need to take a shit!

Now as a listener, I'd love to hear longer tracks with long build up, changes of mood,... And as a promoter, that would be live acts I 'd be ready to book for sure!!

My first love in music is progresive rock, so I know where you come from with tracks from Yes (Gates of Delirium, CLose to the edge) or Emerson Lake & Palmer... Long is beautiful!!           V/A Floating Mirror - OUT NOW - with Celles, Midimal, Electrypnose, Melodix, Troll Scientists, Yab Yum, Gaspard, Ajja, Cradle of Beats! Info on

6-8 minutes is enough to get most people go crazy in front of those speakers!           Nothing is said that has not been said before.

Most psy trance artists don't do solo albums, they submit tracks to compilations, especially when they are just starting to get their names out there. Most artists want to have lots of tracks to submit, so if they make one 20 minute track they have one track to submit. But if they make three seven minute tracks, that's possibly three times the exposure. From the labels point of view they want to have lots of good names on their compilations, so 7-8 minute tracks work in their favor as well.

i dont think that llonger makes better. each track is different and must tell a different story. there are very good tracks at 12 minutes but also at 6 - 7 min, i dont think that really matters , what matters is how well the track is arranged and put toguether.           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

That Excession remix of the Opera track is more than 13 minutes, the original is 11:09. Just thought I'd clear that up

Anyway, here's some more long tracks:

Technossomy - V.T.O.L. (12:34)
Sandman - End Of The World (11:45)
Sandman - Starfinder (12:53)
Orichalcum - Elevation (21:07)
Nuclear Ramjet - Delta 1.60 (16:49)

And there's more examples, but most I can think of are more into the deep/underground trance like Markus Schulz plays in his sets. (Although he plays Freq in his sets too nowadays)
