fred (neuromotor) uses Abelton Live in his live sets, something that permits him to do many changes on the fly and re-arrange his music according to the crowd's feedback. This method is great since it much more dynamic... but then again fred is superhuman, so it doesnt count

also, yes some dj sets are better then that artist's live, some dj's are better then other ones. james monroe dj sets are legendary, lots of skills goes into that kind of act.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Interesting discussion - i wonder if playing stereo our from a PC can count as a live or not - no matter what software is being used ? I had this experience with a well-kinown live i booked to Poland recently. When I asked them what they need they said: 24 channel mixer with parametric EQ, Delay unit (prefably TC Electronics), midi keyboard and SH-101. I thought sounds interesting.....until they arrived plugged in a stereo out from their PC with Ableton Live (with one long track on it), plugged in an SH-101 through the delay and connected a micro clavia to the midi keyboard. Now I ask you is that worth the extra money ?           The truth is out there .........somewhere

Yea, It takes a long time to set up a live set... and to practice it. I used to do live sets off of my Akai mpc2000xl and other Midi gear, and its hard to lug all the equipment around and set it up. I am definitely making the switch to laptop live sets - maybe mixing it with some outboard gear.

Using a program like Ableton Live is definitely "Live" in my eyes. you are playing the laptop like an instrument, able to improvize and make each set unique and special. And it takes a loooong time to create all the loops and practice so it sounds decent when you are in front of a crowd.. of course I'm just a rookie.. and these are only first impressions.           -xo Truffle Radio ox-

Somebody mentioned that a holding a live set and using a computer as an instrument isn't really impressive!

How about the fact that many artists are relying on a computer and do all of their tracks in software rather than hardware. Of course, everybody could find use of a keyboard or bunch of FX boxes but I think that it can all be done on a computer.
So if an artist doesn't use hardware than how could he possibly turn his monotone(looking) laptop set into highly energetic knob tweaking frenzy?

If I'm not wrong, I think DJ Lestat(Talamasca) is using a computer most of the time. I'd say 75% of his music comes from a laptop.

Its very interesting about this discussion about DJ vs live acts / Producers..

Lets comprae it to an Artist who paints.

Who you think should get most money? The guy who PAINTED ( producer) the Picture or the guy who is presenting ( dj) the painting?..
Maybe this is not a fair comparisment. I hope all the djs wont come after me now andkill me.. But with out the producers there would be no stuff for the dj to play right?
But just look in other scenes for example. Tiesto could maybe in a good night get 100.000 EUros for djing. while the guy who Produced the tracks that Tiesto is playing some times only get a 200 - 500 Euro advance from the records label and then no more money? Is that fair? hahaha...
ON THE OTHER HAND: I have seen Djs play the crowds heads of and did a perfect super set and blow the roof of only getting gas money..
In the end I think also one good question is: AM I worth the money I charge? do I perform a good job for one hour live act for 1000 euros? or am I just pressing PLAY on the deck? heheh.. I takes about 1-2 seconds to press the play button for some live acts and for that they get 1500 EUros? Cool.. I would be ashamed though..
In the end its up for everyone to liste nto their concious and let the inspiration flow.. how can I make the best of my live / dj set!
Love and Light! Boom...
