I totally agree. I almost don't bother to buy compilations anymore. I think the last one i bought was the first Crystal Skulls compilation. Looking back this year the only really good Collection of Tunes that was released is Hommega's Full-on 7. Which is surprisingly the only psy trance label that can be called IMHO a Professional one. Everything seem to tick there just as in any normal label.
Seems like a lot of labels feel to cousy under the "Underground" blanket.
Labels, get real, if you won't do a professional work with Mastering, Promotion, A&R and Graphical Design your customers will prefer the other ways to get your music. And this goes especially to one big UK mega label. Fooling your crowd won't get you any respect!

There ARE good compilations still... they can be hard to find with all the crud around however. You know, I'm beginning to suspect many releases are just promotional vehicles for label-mates to get gigs and such... I don't know - there are some really generic compilations out there with tracks that I feel should have stayed on the unreleased circuit... meh!

So what do you think - is it the job of the reviewer to trash the ones that lack inspiration, or just highlight the ones that stand out?

I liked Damion's review of 1200 Mics. One word says it all.

Anyway, I had similar complaints about compilations 4 years ago. This isn't new. Personaly, I prefer buying artist albums but sometimes there are good compilations or even just a few tracks that make a compilation irresistable.

all the good tracks come to us scattered.........

after buying many cds only ten can we say we have enuf good tracks to play at a party
this sux
but so is life

labels cannot solely be blamed
most of them work on a very small capital base and are start ups and dont have enuf money to buy tracks from the artists (big artists)
hence to get sumthing released they have to fill up the compilation witgh strictly OK tracks

plus even if they spent the required money and came up with a compilation with 9/10 smashing tracks they are not guaranteed sales due to mp3s downlading.
hence they dont take the risk and put together watever they can and hope for it to sell

stash has the right idea here.

this thread is absurd. why is every compilation average? i'm not going to teach a lesson on statistics, but you have to understand what average means.

if you get 10 people together, most likely 1 or 2 of them will be very talented, another 4 or so will be decent, and the bottom 1 or 2 will suck. this is how the universe operates, in any area or discipline. remember grades in school? same idea.

what you should hope for is A LOT of music to be put out, just keep putting it out as much as possible. the more music made/released, the more of that 10% GOOD music will be released. yes, that means more 90% bad music, but that's easy: don't listen to it! quit complaining! this is how things improve.

Hehe... I think this is the problem exactly, that everybody thinks they can make music. Too many wannabe djs / artists that are flooding this scene.
I say pls stop making music and let those who do have talent release their work with dignity.           Majority is never right!

I'd phrase it more like:

"Please, please, please... pleasePLEASEpleaseplease, STOP making music. Forever. Please. Thank you."

That way you'd have less 'filler' tracks for compilations.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I agree...but who decides who has talent and who hasn't?

ha ha, ok, i know how you feel, you too candy. and the fact that there ends up being more filler on comps DOES suck.

but to say "talentless hacks stop making music" is rather unrealistic, wouldn't you think? the problem isn't with people making bad music, its with labels releasing it! the more music made, theoretically the more good music to choose from.

whoever said there needs to be a psydownload thing like iTunes is right. this would totally solve the problem.           sound is vibration

Cosmos Mariner this is why I am not trying to change anything or anybody. I know the situation won't change. It will even become worst.
So you guys keep on producing talentless copied / paste music, and cry after that why your music doesn't sell and why so much average music is being sold.
And the rest, keep on opening up new labels and releasing same kind of music. Everybody thinks he's an artist, and everybody thinks he can open up a label.

It's obviously up to the label - it is who chooses the music that will come out eventually. right ? or maybe artists with average music are threatening labels today ?           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
