yes i do believe that the word dark
and evil has branched into many sub genres
this not only segregates this small trance community.
it also devastates it.
A huge banyan tree only gets bigger
and once again we must join forces
once again we must take it one step further for peace between the full on side and the dark side

I never thought i was a night dj
Always thought music was music and as long as i was tellling a story they would all be busy little bees on the dance floor
its only after entering the Goan HOOD did i notice the segregation
Lets have Good djs playing good music
and ban this word dark forever
after all arent we all trying to come into the light.

Ok,does this sum up th reason as to why u started this topic? - U play full on morning,but want to coin a term for ur friends who play 'butterific' music,and that word should not b 'dark' as 'dark' limits th dimensions a musician can set out to explore through his music. Instead it should be called 'Night'! As Night envelopes th entire spectrum of th 'non-fluffy' genres of sound.
Hope thats clear?
Btw,pls dont turn around a few years down th lane n say,it was me and my not-so-stoned friends Doc Evil n Spiritual Mind who coined th word Night and thus all u misreable creatures should pay a royalty if u wanna use it.
Perhaps this will open ur mind further....

OK I'm not a big fan of the new Dark trend (although I was into Black/Death metal before i discovered electronic music 8)
Anyway Handa, with all do respect, I think this kind of attitude is arrogant and closed-minded. Sounds like something a kid
or fundemantalist Christian with its head in the past would say.
This is exactly the same kind of thing many die-hard trancers used to say when Flying Rhino started to put out
Progressive music..."Goa trance is not about Housey grooves and minimalism etc"...
Fast forward 7 years or so; now Progressive has become a very common (big) thing in this scene.
(and if I'm not mistaken you're making it as well nowadays).
So if 'our scene' is really about respect and open-mindedness, let's drop the rules crap.
We have to deal with enough shitty rules in daily life, let's keep our psychedelic playground
free from them ok? So whether u want to please shiny happy people on the morning trancefloor or summon
the prince of darkness with your music, by all means... Peace, Love & Hail Satan

i found that there is a certain something that attracts me to certain tracks... and that certain something exists in all kinds of music, full-on,
dark / night / morning, even some progressive stuff has that certain something that draws me in...
what that certain something is I still have to find out... but i know its got something to do with forward moving sounds, driving rhythm, and an overall track environment (kinda like the overall sound scape the track creates)
e.g fluff may not appeal to me because we dont live in a fluffy world... we seem to live in an energetic world with dark sinister edges. a bright world with harsh lessons.... a heavy world with light ideas, i think when a track sound strikes these chords the music hits the spot... how the artist chooses to do is completely their take on it.... which is why so many different styles might hit the spot for me personally..

Dark music is a shame I think, I think there is a need for dark parts in music, if a track can give a feeling of plunging into the darkest realms of your mind before lifting you back up it would be amazing. maybe its the invention of a genre of dark music that has made this happen. I call the gang mentality, everybody wanting to be part of something so they have to find a label or name to give what they do. if I ever got the oportunity to make music I would be very frustrated with all the labeling crap as I think most real musicians are.
The idea of making a completely dark track must be good therapy at first but surely it would turn into an unhealthy obsession quite easily. I am sure dark isn't night, the night is inevitable unless you live at one of the poles. dark is evil it is the oposite of good yes it is wrong that the we should use the word dark to decscribe bad things. |

I heard that from the inquisition b4  I think again we should not try to define everything to death. Try to stop you mind from thinking so much and dance and enjoy. One track will be more obscure and psychedelic, the next more melodic... It all depends on the DJ to mix it up. But if we let our mind dictate when do we dance or not because of this and that... we are going to have to play for ourselves alone. Enjoy the right here and now. |
