Don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but in ableton live is it possible to have 24 bit playback, as opposed to cd's which are a 16bit format? Don't know if that is true or even makes any difference in the effect of the overall volume, but maybe something to think about?

No it doesnt matter at all.

with 24 bits you have a more big dynamic range than if you onlyhave 16bits (cd), so you can have more volume with less distortion

in live you got the full dynamic range of your instruments at hand... thus one part may also be that the spikes are louder giving a louder impression of the whole...

live is more dynamic then a mastered cd           no situation is stronger then a heart that dares to love
so may the force of life light and love be with you

You can have lower volume without the recording getting covered in noise(if the PA and converters have good dynamic range), but not louder without getting distortion.
The maximum level before the PA goes into clipping does not correlate to the bitrate of the source.

The issue is with the organizers of the party or the artists and/or DJ's.
I think it's mostly an issue of arrangers feeling they like to give extra power to the performance they paid most for.
Maybe also a small factor could be that producers tend to me more knowledgeable about gain structure and tweaking the sound to get the most out of the system?           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

I organise partys and I can say, for sure often people who makes live and are payed more then others dj's or producers, want to have a bit more loud volume to sound more powerfull....

Others time is the organisers who want that.

I normally do that just if the artist ask for it and I controll how much.

maybe it has something to do with soundcards like motu and rme being able to go +6 db while the cdj's will be at zero when connected to the mackie??

- Why are live acts always louder than djs ?

- Because they are later on in the timetable, when the pills and acid start to take effect            Peace, Love, Death metal

Raoul..any mixer or sound card that the live channel audio is run through could be a cause in a volume change, for a simple reason..THEY ALL HAVE GAIN KNOBS.

Easy answer to the original question: Someone turned up the volume.

End of story.

my closest friend is working as a sound engineer on PA's for 5-6 years now. the only true fact is that the levels are KEPT LOW till the headliner comes on.

ps. that's in all kinds of music.

thank you.           extreme
