The first trance tracks were not even released (although you may find them on old DAT tapes), so I find it impossible to find out.

Problem is, there's no one "trance sound" -- some artists were taking influences from space rock (Eat Static), others from industrial (Overlords), and some from acid (Hardfloor), and it all just came together to form one scene. Therefore nobody invented trance, a whole group of people did!           tiger got to hunt,
bird got to fly,
man got to sit and wonder why, why, why?
tiger got to sleep,
bird got to land,
man got to tell himself he understand.

Well, Mike A and Inu are right.

It also depends on what you mean by "the first trance that led up to where we are right now"

For a Psychedelic electronic touch, I'd say you can go back to "Pink Floyd - On the Run" (1973) or "Tangerine Dream - Phaedra" (1974) for example.

For modern era, my personal choice would be "The KLF - What Time is Love (Pure Trance version)" (1988).

I love the old Fripp and Eno tape loop manipulations from the early 70s. One of the albums is called 'No Pussyfooting' and the 2 long tracks are: Heavenly Music Corporation and Swastika Girls. Brilliant ambient psychedelic music with a strong electronic touch by Eno. Definitely has the shades of the later goa sound.
here's a pic of the cover and description:

ok, so you mean not the first track which sounds Trance, but the first artist who was referred to as a Trance producer ?

All I have in store is the historical background given by jahsonic.com : "As a genre, trance is said to have begun as an off-shoot of techno in German clubs during the early 1990s. The name derived in 1991 from a project of Dag Lerner (DJ Dag) and Rolf Ellmer (Jam El Mar) called Dance 2 Trance. Their song "We Came In Peace" also set the original definition of trance music, a drawn out and monotonous pattern with a short but repeating voice sample."

For Psy trance, I think it was started by Goa Gil, Raja Ram, Youth, and those guys in Goa, but I don't know the actual first track. That's an interesting question. There has to be a first. I'm interested. Anyone?

The first tracks which can be referred to as "Goa sound" (which enthralled and inspired future Psy artists like Raja Ram, Youth or Deckker) were hand-made by the Goa DJs from all kind of musical sources. So these first tracks, played in the middle of the 80's, probably even had no name...

Basically, it's the same story as House music : DJs in need of innovative sounds after the Disco collapse (Frankie Knuckles...), making it with what they found here and there (Disco, European electronic music, live drums...), the dancefloor getting nuts, some deciding to make that kind of music in a "professional" way, first tapes out for DJs (remember how the first Acid House track Phuture - Acid traxx appeared), then first vinyls for broader diffusion thanks to the expanding popularity...

Maybe Goa Gil, Gavrila, XP Voodoo, Ram e.t.c
But I think Raja Ram is newer one, well i can mistake...
It is one of those questions that have no answer...           Sea>Israel>Ben-Gurion>Tel-Aviv>Ramat-Goa>Marom Neve
is this pure reality could we be led?

For a 'psychedelic electronic touch' you can go back to the late '60's and check out Silver Apples. They was only two of them, Simeon played a huge bank of oscillators (like early voltage controlled synths) and Danny Taylor played drums. Many of their songs were poems by hippy poet Eileen Llewellyn. Danny Taylor's drumming was way ahead of it's time, he played jagged, angular beats kinda remeniscent of far more modern stuff, with Simeon's electronic madness going on over the top. If you want to hear some really early roots of electronic music check them out.

I think in terms of the origins of Goa trance Jeff pretty much hit the nail on the head from what I know, although I remember getting into a lot of European techno in '91-'92 which could easily be described as trance.

And Eat Static; 'space rock'? Are you thinking of Ozric Tentacles maybe? Eat Static were a trance/techno offshoot from the Ozrics who used to play at Megadog and that sort of party. The Ozrics even used to describe themselves as 'space rock'.           "One nation under a groove".

first trance was stomping around a fire circa 10000 yrs ago when consciousness became apparent --> group consciousness became apparent ----> dance rhythms of the fire.           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.
